The Wicked Are Slain

Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a [a]deadly weapon in his hand.”

І великий голос заволав до моїх вух, кажучи: Наблизилася помста містові! І кожний мав зброю вигублення у своїй руці.

And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his [b]battle-ax in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s inkhorn [c]at his side. They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

І ось шестеро чоловік ішли з дороги високої брами, що дивиться до півночі, і сокира кожного в його руці. І був один муж посеред них, одягнений в довгий одяг, а на його стегнах — пояс із сапфіру. І вони ввійшли, і стали поблизу мідного жертовника.

Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the [d]temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;

І слава Бога Ізраїля піднялася з херувимів, що була на них, до притвору дому. І Він закликав чоловіка, одягненого в довгий одяг, який мав пояс на своїх стегнах,

and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”

і сказав йому: Пройди посеред Єрусалима і постав знак на чолах людей, що стогнуть, і які в болях, за всі беззаконня, що стаються посеред них.

To the others He said in my [e]hearing, “Go after him through the city and kill;[f] do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity.

А цим сказав, як я чув: Підіть у місто за Мною і рубайте, і не щадіть вашими очима, і не милосердьтеся!

Utterly[g] slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the [h]temple.

Старця, молодого, дівчину, немовля і жінок убивайте на вигублення, а до всіх, на кому є знак, не наближайтеся! І почніть від Моїх святощів. І почали від мужів, які перебували всередині в домі.

Then He said to them, “Defile the [i]temple, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.

І Він сказав їм: Опоганьте дім і, вийшовши, наповніть дороги мертвими, і рубайте!

So it was, that while they were killing them, I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?”

І сталося, коли вони рубали, то я впав долілиць, закричав і сказав: Горе мені, Господи! Хіба Ти вигубиш тих, що залишилися з Ізраїля, коли Ти виливаєш Твою лють на Єрусалим?

Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see!’

А Він сказав мені: Неправедність дому Ізраїля і Юди стали дуже, дуже великими, бо земля наповнилася численними народами, а місто сповнилося неправедністю та нечистотою. Адже вони сказали: Господь залишив землю, Господь не дивиться!

And as for Me also, My eye will neither spare, nor will I have pity, but I will recompense their deeds on their own head.”

І Моє око не пощадить, і не помилую. Я дав їхні дороги на їхні голови!

Just then, the man clothed with linen, who had the inkhorn at his side, reported back and said, “I have done as You commanded me.”

І ось чоловік, одягнений у довгий одяг і підперезаний поясом по своїх стегнах, і він відповідав, кажучи: Я зробив так, як мені наказано.
