New King James Version

New American Standard Bible

  • Israel’s Sin and Captivity

    Israel empties his vine;
    He brings forth fruit for himself.
    According to the multitude of his fruit
    He has increased the altars;
    According to the bounty of his land
    They have embellished his sacred pillars.
  • Retribution for Israel’s Sin

    Israel is a luxuriant vine;
    He produces fruit for himself.
    The more his fruit,
    The more altars he made;
    The richer his land,
    The better he made the sacred pillars.
  • Their heart is divided;[a]
    Now they are held guilty.
    He will break down their altars;
    He will ruin their sacred pillars.
  • Their heart is faithless;
    Now they must bear their guilt.
    The LORD will break down their altars
    And destroy their sacred pillars.
  • For now they say,
    “We have no king,
    Because we did not fear the Lord.
    And as for a king, what would he do for us?”
  • Surely now they will say, “We have no king,
    For we do not revere the LORD.
    As for the king, what can he do for us?”
  • They have spoken words,
    Swearing falsely in making a covenant.
    Thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field.
  • They speak mere words,
    With worthless oaths they make covenants;
    And judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.
  • The inhabitants of Samaria fear
    Because of the calf[b] of Beth Aven.
    For its people mourn for it,
    And [c]its priests shriek for it —
    Because its glory has departed from it.
  • The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
    For the calf of Beth-aven.
    Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
    And its idolatrous priests will cry out over it,
    Over its glory, since it has departed from it.
  • The idol also shall be carried to Assyria
    As a present for King Jareb.
    Ephraim shall receive shame,
    And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.
  • The thing itself will be carried to Assyria
    As tribute to King Jareb;
    Ephraim will be seized with shame
    And Israel will be ashamed of its own counsel.
  • As for Samaria, her king is cut off
    Like a twig on the water.
  • Samaria will be cut off with her king
    Like a stick on the surface of the water.
  • Also the high places of [d]Aven, the sin of Israel,
    Shall be destroyed.
    The thorn and thistle shall grow on their altars;
    They shall say to the mountains, “Cover us!”
    And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
  • Also the high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will be destroyed;
    Thorn and thistle will grow on their altars;
    Then they will say to the mountains,
    “Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
  • “O Israel, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah;
    There they stood.
    The battle in Gibeah against the children of [e]iniquity
    Did not [f]overtake them.
  • From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel;
    There they stand!
    Will not the battle against the sons of iniquity overtake them in Gibeah?
  • When it is My desire, I will chasten them.
    Peoples shall be gathered against them
    When I bind them [g]for their two transgressions.
  • When it is My desire, I will chastise them;
    And the peoples will be gathered against them
    When they are bound for their double guilt.
  • Ephraim is a trained heifer
    That loves to thresh grain;
    But I harnessed her fair neck,
    I will make Ephraim [h]pull a plow.
    Judah shall plow;
    Jacob shall break his clods.”
  • Ephraim is a trained heifer that loves to thresh,
    But I will come over her fair neck with a yoke;
    I will harness Ephraim,
    Judah will plow, Jacob will harrow for himself.
  • Sow for yourselves righteousness;
    Reap in mercy;
    Break up your fallow ground,
    For it is time to seek the Lord,
    Till He comes and rains righteousness on you.
  • Sow with a view to righteousness,
    Reap in accordance with kindness;
    Break up your fallow ground,
    For it is time to seek the LORD
    Until He comes to rain righteousness on you.
  • You have plowed wickedness;
    You have reaped iniquity.
    You have eaten the fruit of lies,
    Because you trusted in your own way,
    In the multitude of your mighty men.
  • You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice,
    You have eaten the fruit of lies.
    Because you have trusted in your way, in your numerous warriors,
  • Therefore tumult shall arise among your people,
    And all your fortresses shall be plundered
    As Shalman plundered Beth Arbel in the day of battle —
    A mother dashed in pieces upon her children.
  • Therefore a tumult will arise among your people,
    And all your fortresses will be destroyed,
    As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,
    When mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
  • Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,
    Because of your great wickedness.
    At dawn the king of Israel
    Shall be cut off utterly.
  • Thus it will be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness.
    At dawn the king of Israel will be completely cut off.
