Ephraim’s Sins Rebuked by God

“Ephraim feeds on the wind,
And pursues the east wind;
He daily increases lies and [a]desolation.
Also they make a [b]covenant with the Assyrians,
And oil is carried to Egypt.

Єфре́м оточи́в Мене лжею, лука́вством — Ізраїлів дім, а Юда держа́вся ще з Богом і з святими був вірний.

2

“The Lord also brings a [c]charge against Judah,
And will punish Jacob according to his ways;
According to his deeds He will recompense him.

Єфрем пасе вітра й женеться за вітром із схо́ду. Неправду й руїну розмно́жує він кожного дня, умову складають з Ашшу́ром, олива ж несе́ться в Єгипет.

3

He took his brother by the heel in the womb,
And in his strength he struggled with God.

3

Та в Господа з Юдою пря, і Якова Він навісти́ть за путя́ми його́, за діла́ми його йому зве́рне.

4

Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed;
He wept, and sought favor from Him.
He found Him in Bethel,
And there He spoke to us —

Він в утро́бі тримав за п'яту́ свого брата, а в силі своїй він боровся із Богом, —

That is, the Lord God of hosts.
The Lord is His memorable name.

і боровся він з Анголом, — та й перемі́г. Плакав він, і блага́в він Його́, у Бет-Елі знайшов Він його́, і там з нами гово́рить.

6

So you, by the help of your God, return;
Observe mercy and justice,
And wait on your God continually.

А Господь — Бог Савао́т, Його Йме́ння — Госпо́дь.

7

“A cunning [d]Canaanite!
Deceitful scales are in his hand;
He loves to oppress.

А ти через Бога свого наве́рнешся, стережи милість та суд, і за́вжди надійся на Бога свого́!

And Ephraim said,
‘Surely I have become rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors
They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’

Немов Ханаа́н, — у нього в руці неправдива вага́, любить він кривду чинити.

9

“But I am the Lord your God,
Ever since the land of Egypt;
I will again make you dwell in tents,
As in the days of the appointed feast.

І каже Єфрем: Справді я збагати́вся, знайшов я маєток собі! У всіх моїх чи́нах не зна́йдуть провини мені, що гріхом би була́.

10

I have also spoken by the prophets,
And have multiplied visions;
I have given [e]symbols [f]through the witness of the prophets.”

А Я — Госпо́дь, Бог твій від кра́ю єгипетського, — ще в наме́тах тебе посаджу́, немов за днів свята.

11

Though Gilead has idols —
Surely they are [g]vanity —
Though they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal,
Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field.

І Я говорив до пророків, і виді́ння розмно́жив, і через пророків Я при́тчі казав.

12

Jacob fled to the country of Syria;
Israel served for a spouse,
And for a wife he tended sheep.

Хіба беззако́ння лиши́в Ґілеа́д, і марно́тою стались лиш там? У Ґілґа́лі прино́сили в жертву волів, а їхні же́ртівники — мов ті купи каміння на бо́рознах пі́льних.

By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt,
And by a prophet he was preserved.

І втік Яків на поле Ара́ма, а Ізра́їль за жінку робив, і за жінку отару стері́г.

14

Ephraim provoked Him to anger most bitterly;
Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him,
And return his reproach upon him.

І через пророка Госпо́дь із Єгипту Ізраїля ви́вів, і пророком стере́жений був він.
