Relentless Judgment on Israel

When Ephraim spoke, trembling,
He exalted himself in Israel;
But when he offended through Baal worship, he died.

1

Як говорить, було, Ефраїм, то всї тремтїли. Він був поважний ув Ізраїлї; та він провинив через Баала — та й погиб.

2

Now they sin more and more,
And have made for themselves molded images,
Idols of their silver, according to their skill;
All of it is the work of craftsmen.
They say of them,
“Let [a]the men who sacrifice [b]kiss the calves!”

А тепер чинять вони ще нові провини: поробили собі з свого срібла виливані боввани по свому розуму — все ремісницька робота, — та й навчають людей, що приносять жертву: Цїлуйте биків!

Therefore they shall be like the morning cloud
And like the early dew that passes away,
Like chaff blown off from a threshing floor
And like smoke from a chimney.

За те ж вони позникають, наче мрака вранцї, наче роса, скоро улїтаюча, як полова, що її вітер з току розвіває, та як дим із комена.

“Yet I am the Lord your God
Ever since the land of Egypt,
And you shall know no God but Me;
For there is no savior besides Me.

Нї! я — Господь, Бог твій з часів землї Египецької, і нїяк тобі знати иншого Бога окрім мене, й нема Спасителя окрім мене.

I [c]knew you in the wilderness,
In the land of [d]great drought.

5

Я ж признав тебе за свого в пустинї, у тій землї спраги.

When they had pasture, they were filled;
They were filled and their heart was exalted;
Therefore they forgot Me.

Маючи поживу, вони їли до ситу; а коли засичувались, підіймалось у гору їх серце, й забували про мене.

7

“So I will be to them like a lion;
Like a leopard by the road I will lurk;

За те ж станусь я їм левом — левчуком, що чатує при дорозї.

8

I will meet them like a bear deprived of her cubs;
I will tear open their rib cage,
And there I will devour them like a lion.
The [e]wild beast shall tear them.

Нападати буду їх, як ведмедиця, що забрано їй дїти, — як левиця, роздирати й виїдати місце, де серце їх бється; дикі зьвірі будуть їх розторгувати.

“O Israel, [f]you are destroyed,
But [g]your help is from Me.

Ти самий, Ізраїлю, погубив себе, бо тілько в менї — опора твоя.

10

[h]I will be your King;
Where is any other,
That he may save you in all your cities?
And your judges to whom you said,
‘Give me a king and princes’?

А де ж царь твій? Нехай би тепер рятував тебе по всїх містах твоїх! Де ж суддї твої, що про них ти мовляв: Дай нам царя і старшину?

I gave you a king in My anger,
And took him away in My wrath.

Я ж дав тобі царя у гнїву мому, та й — одняв у досадї моїй.

12

“The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
His sin is stored up.

О, Ефраїмове беззаконство звязане в узол, сховано його гріх, не забудесь!

13

The sorrows of a woman in childbirth shall come upon him.
He is an unwise son,
For he should not stay long where children are born.

13

Прийдуть на нього муки породїлї; він — нерозумний син, инакше не ждав би, аж прийдеться родити дїтей.

14

“I will ransom them from the [i]power of [j]the grave;
I will redeem them from death.
O Death, [k]I will be your plagues!
O [l]Grave, [m]I will be your destruction!
Pity is hidden from My eyes.”

Та я вибавлю їх із потали пекла, відкуплю їх від смертї. Де жало твоє, смерте? а ти, пекло, де твоя побіда? жалю зза сього у мене не буде.

15

Though he is fruitful among his brethren,
An east wind shall come;
The wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness.
Then his spring shall become dry,
And his fountain shall be dried up.
He shall plunder the treasury of every desirable prize.

Хоч Ефраїм між братами й плодющий, та з востоку підійметься буря, підійметься буря Господня з пустинї, — і висхне джерело його, й зсякне виплив його; вона опустошить скарбівню всього посуду дорогого.
