Jonah’s Disobedience

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

1

I було́ слово Господнє до Йо́ни, Аміттаєвого сина, таке:

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

„Устань, іди до Ніневі́ї, великого міста, і проповідуй проти нього, бо їхнє зло прийшло перед лице Моє“.

But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

І встав Йо́на, щоб утекти до Тарші́шу з-перед Господнього лиця. І зійшов він до Яфи, і знайшов корабля́, що йшов до Тарші́шу, і дав заплату його, і ввійшов у нього, щоб відпли́сти з ними до Таршішу з-перед Господнього лиця.

The Storm at Sea

But the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

А Госпо́дь кинув сильного вітра на море, — і зняла́ся на морі велика буря, і вже ду́мали, що корабель буде розбитий.

Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten [b]the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

І налякалися моряки́, і кликали кожен до своїх богі́в, і викидали ті речі, що були́ на кораблі, до моря, щоб полегши́ти себе. А Йо́на зійшов до спо́ду корабля́, і ліг, і заснув.

So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

І приступив до нього керівни́к корабля, та й сказав йому: „Чого ти спиш? Уставай, заклич до свого Бога, — може згадає цей Бог про нас, і ми не зги́немо“.

And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

І сказали вони один до о́дного: „Ідіть, і киньмо жеребки́, та й пізна́ємо, через ко́го нам оце лихо“. І кинули вони жеребки́, — і впав жеребо́к на Йо́ну.

Then they said to him, “Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”

І сказали до нього: „Об'яви ж нам, через що́ нам це лихо? Яке твоє зайня́ття, і звідки ти йдеш? Який твій край, і з якого ти наро́ду?“

So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear [c]the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

І сказав він до них: „Я євре́й, і боюся я Го́спода, Небесного Бога, що вчинив море та суході́л“.

Jonah Thrown into the Sea

Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

І налякалися ті люди великим стра́хом, і сказали до нього: „Що́ це ти наробив?“ Бо ці люди дові́далися, що він утікає з-перед Господнього лиця, бо він це їм об'яви́в.

Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?” — for the sea was growing more tempestuous.

І вони сказали до нього: „Що́ ми зробимо тобі, щоб утихоми́рилось море, щоб не залива́ло нас?“ Бо море бушува́ло все більше.

12

And he said to them, “Pick me up and [d]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

І сказав він до них: „Візьміть мене, і киньте мене до моря, і втихоми́риться море перед вами; бо я знаю, що через мене оця велика буря на вас“.

13

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them.

І міцно гребли́ ці люди, щоб дістатися до суходо́лу, та не могли, бо море бушувало все більш проти них.

14

Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.”

І вони кли́кнули до Господа та й сказали: „О Господи, нехай же не згинемо ми за душу цього чоловіка, і не давай на нас непови́нної крови, бо Ти, Господи, чиниш, як бажаєш!“

15

So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

15

І підняли́ вони Йону, і кинули його до моря, — і спини́лося море від своєї лю́тости.

16

Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.

16

І налякалися ці люди Господа великим стра́хом, і прино́сили Господе́ві жертви, і складали обі́тнищі.
