Jonah’s Disobedience

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

"Иди в великий город Ниневию и проповедуй против него, ибо весть о его злодеяниях дошла до Меня".

But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

Но Иона убежал от Господа и отправился в Фарсис. Он добрался до Иоппии, где отыскал корабль, отплывающий в этот порт. Заплатив за проезд, он поднялся на корабль и отправился в Фарсис, чтобы спастись бегством от Господа.

The Storm at Sea

But the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

Тогда Господь послал сильный ветер на море, и поднялась такая яростная буря, что кораблю грозило крушение.

Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten [b]the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

Всех моряков охватил ужас и они стали взывать каждый к своему богу. Они сбросили груз за борт, чтобы облегчить корабль. Иона же спустился в трюм под палубой, лёг и крепко заснул.

So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

Капитан корабля пришёл к нему и сказал: "Как можешь ты спать? Вставай и обратись к своему Богу! Может, Он услышит твою молитву и не даст нам погибнуть".

And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

Тогда моряки сказали друг другу: "Давайте бросим жребий, чтобы узнать, из-за кого мы терпим бедствие". Они бросили жребий, и он пал на Иону.

Then they said to him, “Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”

Тогда моряки сказали Ионе: "Это по твоей вине нас постигла страшная беда! Кто ты? Откуда ты родом? Из какой страны и из какого народа?"

So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear [c]the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

Он ответил: "Я — еврей и поклоняюсь Господу, Богу небес, сотворившему море и сушу".

Jonah Thrown into the Sea

Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

Иона рассказал им, что он убегает от Господа. Это привело их в ужас и они спросили его: "Какой же страшный поступок ты совершил против твоего Бога?"

Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?” — for the sea was growing more tempestuous.

А море бушевало всё сильнее и сильнее. Тогда они спросили его: "Что нам сделать с тобой, чтобы море успокоилось?"

And he said to them, “Pick me up and [d]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

"Поднимите меня и бросьте за борт, — отвечал он, — тогда море успокоится. Я знаю, что эта страшная буря обрушилась на вас из-за меня".

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them.

Вместо этого люди стали изо всех сил грести к берегу. Но это было им не под силу, так как море становилось всё яростнее.

Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.”

Тогда моряки взмолились: "Господи, не губи нас за то, что мы лишаем этого человека жизни. Не возлагай на нас вину за убийство невинного, ибо Ты — Господь, и Ты вершишь то, что угодно Тебе".

So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

Они взяли Иону и бросили его за борт, и свирепое море успокоилось.

Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.

При виде этого люди испытали великий страх перед Господом, принесли Ему жертву и дали обеты.

Jonah’s Prayer and Deliverance

Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Господь же сделал так, что Иону проглотила огромная рыба, во чреве которой он провёл три дня и три ночи.
