The Just Shall Live by Faith

I will stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected.

Я встану на стражу,
поднимусь на крепостные валы.
Буду ждать, что Он скажет,
и что мне отвечать по жалобе моей.4

The Just Live by Faith

Then the Lord answered me and said:
“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.

Тогда Господь ответил:

— Запиши откровение,
выведи на табличках,
чтобы его повсюду прочитал вестник.

3

For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.

Ведь еще не время ему исполниться,
оно говорит о конце
и не обманет.
Если покажется, что медлит — жди:
оно сбудется, не задержится.

“Behold the proud,
His soul is not upright in him;
But the just shall live by his faith.

Посмотри на надменных:
их дух не праведен,
а праведный верой5 жив будет.

Woe to the Wicked

“Indeed, because he transgresses by wine,
He is a proud man,
And he does not stay at home.
Because he enlarges his desire as [a]hell,
And he is like death, and cannot be satisfied,
He gathers to himself all nations
And heaps up for himself all peoples.

Вино обманывает этих гордецов
и не дает им покоя.
Они разверзают пасть, как мир мертвых,6
и, как смерть, они ненасытны.
Они покоряют себе все народы,
все племена подчиняют.

“Will not all these take up a proverb against him,
And a taunting riddle against him, and say,
‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his — how long?
And to him who loads himself with [b]many pledges’?

Но все их пленники будут насмехаться над ними и глумиться поговорками, говоря:

«Горе тому, кто копит чужое добро,
кто богатеет на взятом в долг!
Надолго ли это?»

Will not [c]your creditors rise up suddenly?
Will they not awaken who oppress you?
And you will become their booty.

Не поднимутся ли нежданно твои заимодавцы,7
не проснутся ли те, кто тебя трепетать заставит?
Ты станешь для них добычей.

Because you have plundered many nations,
All the remnant of the people shall plunder you,
Because of men’s [d]blood
And the violence of the land and the city,
And of all who dwell in it.

За то, что ограбил ты много народов,
те из них, что остались, тебя ограбят,
потому что ты проливал кровь,
совершал насилие на земле,
в городах и над всеми их жителями.

“Woe to him who covets evil gain for his house,
That he may set his nest on high,
That he may be delivered from the [e]power of disaster!

Горе тому, кто наполняет свой дом неправедной поживой,
чтобы устроить свое гнездо на высоте
и избежать когтей несчастья!

You give shameful counsel to your house,
Cutting off many peoples,
And sin against your soul.

Ты свой дом опозорил,
погубив многочисленные народы;
ты расплатишься за это жизнью.

For the stone will cry out from the wall,
And the beam from the timbers will answer it.

Сами камни из стен будут кричать,
деревянные балки — им отвечать.

“Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed,
Who establishes a city by iniquity!

Горе тому, кто строит город на крови,
созидает город на преступлении.

13

Behold, is it not of the Lord of hosts
That the peoples labor [f]to feed the fire,
And nations weary themselves in vain?

Разве не Господь Сил решил,
что труды людей — лишь пища для огня,
что народы изнуряют себя напрасно?

14

For the earth will be filled
With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,
As the waters cover the sea.

14

Ведь земля исполнится познанием славы Господа,
как вода наполняет море.

15

“Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbor,
[g]Pressing him to your bottle,
Even to make him drunk,
That you may look on [h]his nakedness!

Горе тому, кто спаивает ближних,
наливая из бурдюков, пока те не опьянеют,
чтобы после смотреть на их наготу.

16

You are filled with shame instead of glory.
You also — drink!
And [i]be exposed as uncircumcised!
The cup of the Lord’s right hand will be turned against you,
And utter shame will be on your glory.

Ты бесчестием, не славой, сыт;
напейся теперь сам и покажи свою наготу!8
Чаша из правой руки Господней дойдет и до тебя,
и позор затмит твою славу.

17

For the violence done to Lebanon will cover you,
And the plunder of beasts which made them afraid,
Because of men’s blood
And the violence of the land and the city,
And of all who dwell in it.

Злодейство твое на Ливане погубит тебя,
бойня зверей, учиненная тобой, тебя же и ужаснет.
Ты проливал человеческую кровь,
совершал насилие на земле,
в городах и над всеми их жителями.

18

“What profit is the image, that its maker should carve it,
The molded image, a teacher of lies,
That the maker of its mold should trust in it,
To make mute idols?

Что за польза от идола,
которого сделал ремесленник,
от литой статуи, что учит только лжи?
Верит мастер изделию своему,
а оно — лишь немой идол.

19

Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Awake!’
To silent stone, ‘Arise! It shall teach!’
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
Yet in it there is no breath at all.

Горе тому, кто говорит дереву: «Оживи!» —
безмолвному камню: «Пробудись!»
Научит ли он?
И хотя он отделан золотом и серебром,
в нем нет дыхания.

20

“But the Lord is in His holy temple.
Let all the earth keep silence before Him.”

20

А Господь — в святом храме Своем;
пусть молчит вся земля перед Ним.
