The Command to Build God’s House

In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

На втором году правления царя Дария,1 в первый день шестого месяца,2 Зоровавелю, сыну Шеалтиила, наместнику Иудеи, и Иисусу, сыну Иоседека, первосвященнику, было слово Господа через пророка Аггея:

“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.” ’ ”

— Так говорит Господь Сил: «Этот народ говорит: „Еще не настало время строить дом Господа“».

Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

И было слово Господа через пророка Аггея:

“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this [a]temple to lie in ruins?”

— А вам разве время жить в хороших домах, когда этот дом лежит в развалинах?

Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!

Поэтому так говорит Господь Сил:
— Подумайте о своих путях.

“You have sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”

Вы посеяли много, а собрали мало. Вы едите, но не наедаетесь. Вы пьете, но не напиваетесь. Вы одеваетесь, но не в силах согреться. Вы трудитесь лишь для того, чтобы положить заработанное в дырявый кошелек.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!

Так говорит Господь Сил:
— Подумайте о своих путях.

Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the [b]temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord.

Поднимитесь в горы, принесите дерева и постройте дом. Он будет Мне угоден, и Я прославлюсь, — говорит Господь. —

“You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.

Вы ждали многого, но получилось мало. А то, что вы принесли домой, Я развеял. За что? — возвещает Господь Сил. — За Мой дом, который лежит в развалинах, в то время как каждый из вас заботится лишь о своем доме.

Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.

Поэтому небо над вами удержало росу, а земля удержала свой урожай.

For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”

Я наслал засуху на поля и нагорья, на зерно, молодое вино и масло, на произведения земли, на людей, на скот и на труд ваших рук.

The People’s Obedience

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the Lord.

И Зоровавель, сын Шеалтиила, с первосвященником Иисусом, сыном Иоседека, и со всем остальным народом послушались голоса Господа, их Бога, и слов пророка Аггея, потому что его послал Господь, их Бог. И народ устрашился Господа.

Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the Lord.”

Аггей, вестник Господа, передал народу весть от Господа:
— Я с вами, — возвещает Господь.

So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,

И Господь пробудил дух наместника Иудеи Зоровавеля, сына Шеалтиила, дух первосвященника Иисуса, сына Иоседека, и дух всего остального народа. Они пришли и начали трудиться в храме Господа Сил, их Бога,

on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
