Obedience Better than Fasting

Now in the fourth year of King Darius it came to pass that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, on the fourth day of the ninth month, Chislev,

На четвертом году правления царя Дария, в четвертый день девятого месяца, месяца кислева,36 было слово Господне к Захарии.

when [a]the people sent [b]Sherezer, with Regem-Melech and his men, to [c]the house of God, [d]to pray before the Lord,

Народ Вефиля послал Сарецера и Регем-Мелеха вместе с их людьми искать у Господа расположения

and to ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month and [e]fast as I have done for so many years?”

и спросить у священников дома Господа Сил и у пророков: «Скорбеть ли мне и поститься ли в пятом месяце, как я делаю это уже много лет?».

Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying,

И было ко мне слово Господне:

“Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me — for Me?

— Спроси у всего народа страны и у священников: «Когда вы постились и скорбели последние семьдесят лет в пятом и седьмом месяце, то для Меня ли вы постились?

When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves?

А когда вы ели и пили, то не для самих ли себя вы пировали?

Should you not have obeyed the words which the Lord proclaimed through the former prophets when Jerusalem and the cities around it were inhabited and prosperous, and the [f]South and the Lowland were inhabited?’ ”

Не те ли это слова, которыми Господь взывал через прежних пророков, когда Иерусалим с окрестными городами был населен и покоился в мире и Негев с западными предгорьями был обитаем?»

Disobedience Resulted in Captivity

Then the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying,

И было к Захарии слово Господне:

“Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Execute true justice,
Show [g]mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.

— Так говорит Господь Сил: «Судите справедливо; будьте милостивы и сострадательны друг к другу.

10

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless,
The alien or the poor.
Let none of you plan evil in his heart
Against his brother.’

Не притесняйте вдову и сироту, чужеземца и бедняка. Не замышляйте зло друг против друга».

“But they refused to heed, shrugged[h] their shoulders, and stopped[i] their ears so that they could not hear.

Но они отказались внимать; они упрямо повернулись спиной и заткнули уши, чтобы не слышать.

Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.

Они сделали свои сердца твердыми, как кремень, чтобы не слушать Закона и слов, которые Господь Сил посылал Своим Духом через прежних пророков. И поэтому Господь Сил сильно разгневался.

Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts.

«Когда Я37 звал их, они не слушали; поэтому, когда они будут звать, Я тоже не стану слушать, — говорит Господь Сил. —

14

“But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

Я ураганом развеял их среди народов, которых они не знали. Страна после них осталась в таком запустении, что через нее перестали ездить. Так они привели прекрасную землю в запустение».
