Obedience Better than Fasting

Now in the fourth year of King Darius it came to pass that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, on the fourth day of the ninth month, Chislev,

І сталося, у четвертому році царя Да́рія було Господнє слово до Заха́рія четвертого дня дев'ятого місяця, кіслева.

when [a]the people sent [b]Sherezer, with Regem-Melech and his men, to [c]the house of God, [d]to pray before the Lord,

І послав Бет-Ел Сар'ецера й Реґем-Ме́леха та людей його, щоб Господа вблага́ти,

and to ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month and [e]fast as I have done for so many years?”

щоб сказати священикам, які в домі Господа Саваота, та пророкам, говорячи: „Чи я маю плакати п'ятого місяця та по́стити, як я робив це багато ро́ків?“

Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying,

І було́ слово Господа Саваота таке:

5

“Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me — for Me?

„Говори до всього наро́ду землі й до священиків, кажучи: Якщо ви по́стили та лементува́ли п'ятого й сьомого місяця, і то сімдеся́т років чи то ви по́стили для Мене?

6

When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves?

А коли ви їсте та коли ви п'єте́, чи ж то не собі ви їсте й не собі ви п'єте́?

7

Should you not have obeyed the words which the Lord proclaimed through the former prophets when Jerusalem and the cities around it were inhabited and prosperous, and the [f]South and the Lowland were inhabited?’ ”

Чи ж це не ті слова́, які Господь виголо́шував через да́вніх пророків, коли Єрусалим був насе́лений та спокійний, і його міста́ навколо нього, і пі́вдень, і рівни́на були насе́лені?“

Disobedience Resulted in Captivity

Then the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying,

І було до Заха́рія слово Господнє таке:

“Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Execute true justice,
Show [g]mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.

„Так говорить Господь Саваот, промовляючи: „Судіть суд по правді, і чиніть один о́дному милосердя та милість.

10

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless,
The alien or the poor.
Let none of you plan evil in his heart
Against his brother.’

10

А вдови́ й сироти́, чужи́нця та вбогого не гнобі́ть, і не ду́майте зла один о́дному в серці своєму!“

11

“But they refused to heed, shrugged[h] their shoulders, and stopped[i] their ears so that they could not hear.

Та вони не хотіли слу́хати, і відверну́ли своє раме́но від Мене, а ву́ха свої вчинили тяжки́ми, щоб не слу́хати,

12

Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.

і серце своє зробили кре́менем, щоб не слу́хати Зако́ну, та тих слів, що послав Господь Саваот Своїм Духом через давніх пророків. І був великий гнів від Господа Саваота.

13

Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts.

„І сталося, як Я кликав, то вони не слу́халися, так вони будуть кликати, та не буду Я слухати, каже Господь Савао́т.

14

“But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

І розвіяв Я їх по всіх наро́дах, які не знали їх, а край був спусто́шений по них, так що не було́ такого, хто б перехо́див чи верта́вся, і вони зробили улю́блений край спусто́шенням“.
