Obedience Better than Fasting

Now in the fourth year of King Darius it came to pass that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, on the fourth day of the ninth month, Chislev,

І сталося, що в четвертому році царя Дарія було Господнє слово до Захарії, четвертого дня дев’ятого місяця, який є хаселев.

when [a]the people sent [b]Sherezer, with Regem-Melech and his men, to [c]the house of God, [d]to pray before the Lord,

І до Ветилю послав Сарасар і цар Арвесеер та його мужі, щоб надолужити Господу,

and to ask the priests who were in the house of the Lord of hosts, and the prophets, saying, “Should I weep in the fifth month and [e]fast as I have done for so many years?”

кажучи до священиків, що в домі Господа Вседержителя, і до пророків, промовляючи: Хіба сюди в п’ятому місяці ввійшло освячення, як я і чинив уже досить років?

Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying,

І до мене було Господнє слово, що промовляло:

“Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me — for Me?

Скажи всьому народові землі та священикам, мовлячи: Коли постили, чи били себе в груди на п’ятий день, чи на сьомий, і ось сімдесят років, то хіба ви справді постили [1] для Мене?

When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves?

І якщо їсте та якщо п’єте, хіба не ви їсте і ви п’єте?

7

Should you not have obeyed the words which the Lord proclaimed through the former prophets when Jerusalem and the cities around it were inhabited and prosperous, and the [f]South and the Lowland were inhabited?’ ”

Чи не ці є слова, які сказав Господь рукою попередніх пророків, коли Єрусалим був заселений і мав у достатку, і його міста довкола, гірські околиці та долини були заселені?

Disobedience Resulted in Captivity

Then the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying,

І було Господнє слово до Захарії, що промовляло:

“Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘Execute true justice,
Show [g]mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.

Так говорить Господь Вседержитель, кажучи: Судіть праведний суд і чиніть милосердя та милість кожний своєму братові,

10

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless,
The alien or the poor.
Let none of you plan evil in his heart
Against his brother.’

10

не чиніть насилля над вдовою, сиротою, чужинцем та бідним, і хай кожний не пам’ятає зло свого брата у своїх серцях.

11

“But they refused to heed, shrugged[h] their shoulders, and stopped[i] their ears so that they could not hear.

Та вони не послухалися, аби сприйняти, і дали спини, бувши нерозумними, і зробили свої вуха тяжкими, щоб не почути,

12

Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.

і зробили їхнє серце неслухняним, щоб не вислухати мій закон і слова, які послав Господь Вседержитель Своїм духом рукою попередніх пророків. І був великий гнів від Господа Вседержителя.

Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts.

І буде так, як Він сказав, і вони не послухали, таким чином кричатимуть. Та Я не вислухаю, — говорить Господь Вседержитель!

14

“But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate.”

І розкидаю їх поміж усі народи, яких вони не знали, і за ними земля запустіє без того, хто проходить чи повертається. І вони поставили вибрану землю на знищення.
