New King James Version

Darby Bible Translation

  • John the Baptist Sends Messengers to Jesus

Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities.
  • John's Inquiry

And it came to pass when Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities.
  • And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he [a]sent two of his disciples
  • But John, having heard in the prison the works of the Christ, sent by his disciples,
  • and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
  • and said to him, Art *thou* the coming [one]? or are we to wait for another?
  • Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
  • And Jesus answering said to them, Go, report to John what ye hear and see.
  • The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
  • Blind [men] see and lame walk; lepers are cleansed, and deaf hear; and dead are raised, and poor have glad tidings preached to them:
  • And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
  • and blessed is whosoever shall not be offended in me.
  • As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
  • Jesus Testifies about John

But as they went [away], Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed moved about by the wind?
  • But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
  • But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate raiment? behold, those who wear delicate things are in the houses of kings.
  • But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
  • But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet:
  • For this is he of whom it is written:
‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’
  • this is he of whom it is written, Behold, *I* send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.
  • “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
  • Verily I say to you, that there is not arisen among [the] born of women a greater than John the baptist. But he who is a little one in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.
  • And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
  • But from the days of John the baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens is taken by violence, and [the] violent seize on it.
  • For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
  • For all the prophets and the law have prophesied unto John.
  • And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.
  • And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, who is to come.
  • He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
  • He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
  • “But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions,
  • But to whom shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, which, calling to their companions,
  • and saying:
‘We played the flute for you,
    And you did not dance;
    We mourned to you,
    And you did not [b]lament.’
  • say, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced: we have mourned to you, and ye have not wailed.
  • For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
  • For John has come neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.
  • The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a [c]winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her [d]children.”
  • The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, a man [that is] eating and wine-drinking, a friend of tax-gatherers, and of sinners: -- and wisdom has been justified by her children.
  • Woe to the Impenitent Cities

Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent:
  • Woe to the Unrepentant

Then began he to reproach the cities in which most of his works of power had taken place, because they had not repented.
  • “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
  • Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee Bethsaida! for if the works of power which have taken place in you, had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they had long ago repented in sackcloth and ashes.
  • But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
  • But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in judgment-day than for you.
  • And you, Capernaum, who[e] are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
  • And *thou*, Capernaum, who hast been raised up to heaven, shalt be brought down even to hades. For if the works of power which have taken place in thee, had taken place in Sodom, it had remained until this day.
  • But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
  • But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for [the] land of Sodom in judgment-day than for thee.
  • Jesus Gives True Rest

At that time Jesus answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.
  • Rest for the Weary

At that time, Jesus answering said, I praise thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes.
  • Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
  • Yea, Father, for thus has it been well-pleasing in thy sight.
  • All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
  • All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son but the Father, nor does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son may be pleased to reveal [him].
  • Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
  • Come to me, all ye who labour and are burdened, and *I* will give you rest.
  • Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am [f]gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
  • Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest to your souls;
  • For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
  • for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
