New King James Version

Darby Bible Translation

  • The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers

Then He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to [a]vinedressers and went into a far country.
  • The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

And he began to say to them in parables, A man planted a vineyard, and made a fence round [it] and dug a wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country.
  • Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that he might receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vinedressers.
  • And he sent a bondman to the husbandmen at the season, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
  • And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
  • But they took him, and beat [him], and sent [him] away empty.
  • Again he sent them another servant, [b]and at him they threw stones, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated.
  • And again he sent to them another bondman; and [at] him they [threw stones, and] struck [him] on the head, and sent [him] away with insult.
  • And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some.
  • And [again] he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some.
  • Therefore still having one son, his beloved, he also sent him to them last, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
  • Having yet therefore one beloved son, he sent also him to them the last, saying, They will have respect for my son.
  • But those [c]vinedressers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
  • But those husbandmen said to one another, This is the heir: come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours.
  • So they took him and killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.
  • And they took him and killed him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard.
  • “Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vinedressers, and give the vineyard to others.
  • What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.
  • Have you not even read this Scripture:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
    Has become the chief cornerstone.
  • Have ye not even read this scripture, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone:
  • This was the Lord’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
  • this is of [the] Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes?
  • And they sought to lay hands on Him, but feared the multitude, for they knew He had spoken the parable against them. So they left Him and went away.
  • And they sought to lay hold of him, and they feared the crowd; for they knew that he had spoken the parable of them. And they left him and went away.
  • The Pharisees: Is It Lawful to Pay Taxes to Caesar?

Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, to catch Him in His words.
  • Paying Taxes to Caesar

And they send to him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might catch him in speaking.
  • When they had come, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and [d]care about no one; for You do not [e]regard the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
  • And they come and say to him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any one; for thou regardest not men's person, but teachest the way of God with truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?
  • Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?”
But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius that I may see it.
  • Should we give, or should we not give? But he knowing their hypocrisy said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a denarius that I may see [it].
  • So they brought it.
And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
  • And they brought [it]. And he says to them, Whose [is] this image and superscription? And they said to him, Caesar's.
  • And Jesus answered and said to them, [f]“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
    And they marveled at Him.
  • And Jesus answering said to them, Pay what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God. And they wondered at him.
  • The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?

Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him; and they asked Him, saying:
  • Sadducees Question the Resurrection

And Sadducees come to him, that say there is no resurrection; and they demanded of him saying,
  • “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, and leaves his wife behind, and leaves no children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.
  • Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if any one's brother die, and leave a wife behind, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.
  • Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife; and dying, he left no offspring.
  • There were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and dying did not leave seed;
  • And the second took her, and he died; nor did he leave any offspring. And the third likewise.
  • and the second took her and died, and neither did he leave seed; and the third likewise.
  • So the seven had her and left no offspring. Last of all the woman died also.
  • And the seven [took her and] did not leave seed. Last of all the woman also died.
  • Therefore, in the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all seven had her as wife.”
  • In the resurrection, when they shall rise again, of which of them shall she be wife, for the seven had her as wife?
  • Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore [g]mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?
  • And Jesus answering said to them, Do not ye therefore err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God?
  • For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
  • For when they rise from among [the] dead they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels [who are] in the heavens.
  • But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
  • But concerning the dead that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, in [the section of] the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, *I* [am] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
  • He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly [h]mistaken.”
  • He is not the God of [the] dead, but of [the] living. *Ye* therefore greatly err.
  • The Scribes: Which Is the First Commandment of All?

Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, [i]perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the [j]first commandment of all?”
  • The Greatest Commandment

And one of the scribes who had come up, and had heard them reasoning together, perceiving that he had answered them well, demanded of him, Which is [the] first commandment of all?
  • Jesus answered him, “The [k]first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
  • And Jesus answered him, [The] first commandment of all [is], Hear, Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord;
  • And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ [l]This is the first commandment.
  • and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding, and with all thy strength. This is [the] first commandment.
  • And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
  • And a second like it [is] this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is not another commandment greater than these.
  • So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.
  • And the scribe said to him, Right, teacher; thou hast spoken according to [the] truth. For he is one, and there is none other besides him;
  • And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, [m]with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
  • and to love him with all the heart, and with all the intelligence, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbour as one's self, is more than all the burnt-offerings and sacrifices.
  • Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”
But after that no one dared question Him.
  • And Jesus, seeing that he had answered intelligently, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared question him any more.
  • Jesus: How Can David Call His Descendant Lord?

Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?
  • Whose Son is the Christ?

And Jesus answering said [as he was] teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say that the Christ is son of David?
  • For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
  • [for] David himself said [speaking] in the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet.
  • Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”
And the common people heard Him gladly.
  • David himself [therefore] calls him Lord, and whence is he his son? And the mass of the people heard him gladly.
  • Beware of the Scribes

Then He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces,
  • Beware of the Scribes

And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and salutations in the marketplaces,
  • the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,
  • and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;
  • who devour widows’ houses, and [n]for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
  • who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.
  • The Widow’s Two Mites

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.
  • The Poor Widow's Offering

And Jesus, having sat down opposite the treasury, saw how the crowd was casting money into the treasury; and many rich cast in much.
  • Then one poor widow came and threw in two [o]mites, which make a [p]quadrans.
  • And a poor widow came and cast in two mites, which is a farthing.
  • So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;
  • And having called his disciples to [him] he said to them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow has cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury:
  • for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”
  • for all have cast in of that which they had in abundance, but she of her destitution has cast in all that she had, the whole of her living.
