New King James Version

New International Version

  • Defilement Comes from Within

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.
  • That Which Defiles

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus
  • Now [a]when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, [b]they found fault.
  • and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.
  • For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands [c]in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.
  • (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.
  • When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.
  • When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.a)
  • Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
  • So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
  • He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
  • He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“ ‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
  • And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
  • They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’b
  • For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men — [d]the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”
  • You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
  • He said to them, “All too well you [e]reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
  • And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observec your own traditions!
  • For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’
  • For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’d and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’e
  • But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban” — ’ (that is, a gift to God),
  • But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God) —
  • then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,
  • then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.
  • making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
  • Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
  • When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:
  • Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.
  • There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.
  • Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”
