Defilement Comes from Within

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.

1

І сходять ся до Него Фарисеї та деякі з письменників, прийшовши з Єрусалиму.

Now [a]when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, [b]they found fault.

І, побачивши деяких з учеників Його, що нечистими руками, се єсть немитими, їдять хлїб, судили:

For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands [c]in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.

(бо Фарисеї і всї Жиди, поки по локіть не помиють рук, не їдять, додержуючи переказу старших;

4

When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other things which they have received and hold, like the washing of cups, pitchers, copper vessels, and couches.

і з торгу, поки не обмиють ся, не їдять; і иншого багацько, що прийняли додержувати: обмиваннє чаш, і глеків, і мідяного посуду, і столів).

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”

Тодї питали Його Фарисеї та письменники: Чом ученики Твої не живуть по переказу старших, а їдять хлїб непомитими руками?

He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.

Він же, озвавшись, рече їм: Що добре пророкував Ісаїя про вас, лицемірів, як писано: Сей народ устами мене шанує, серце ж їх далеко від мене.

And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

Марно ж покланяють ся менї, навчаючи наук, заповідей чоловічих.

8

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men — [d]the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.”

Занехаявши бо заповідь Божу, держите ви переказ чоловічий, обмиваннє глеків та чаш, і иншого подібного такого багато робите.

He said to them, “All too well you [e]reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

9

І рече до них: Добре відкидаєте ви заповідь Божу, щоб переказ ваш хоронити.

10

For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

Мойсей бо сказав: Поважай батька твого й матїр твою; і: Хто налає батька або матїр, нехай смертю вмре.

11

But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban” — ’ (that is, a gift to God),

Ви ж кажете: Коли скаже чоловік батькові або матері: Корван (що єсть: Дар), чим би ти з мене покористував ся;

12

then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,

і не даєте йому нїчого більше робити батькові своєму, або матері своїй,

13

making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

обертаючи в нїщо слово Боже переказом вашим, що ви переказали; й подібного такого багато робите.

14

When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear Me, everyone, and understand:

І, покликавши ввесь народ, рече до них: Слухайте мене всї, та й розумійте:

15

There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a man.

15

Нема нїчого осторонь чоловіка, що ввійшовши в него, могло б опоганити його; а що виходить від него, се те, що поганить чоловіка.
