New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • Feeding the Five Thousand

After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
  • Jesus Feeds Five Thousand

After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias.
  • Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased.[a]
  • A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went, because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed the sick.
  • And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.
  • Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him.
  • Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near.
  • (It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.)
  • Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”
  • Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?”
  • But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.
  • He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do.
  • Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.”
  • Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough moneya to feed them!”
  • One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
  • Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.
  • “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?”
  • “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
  • Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
  • “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.)
  • And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them [b]to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.
  • Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
  • So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.”
  • After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”
  • Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
  • So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves.
  • Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
  • When the people saw himb do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”c
  • Jesus Walks on the Sea

Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.
  • When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
  • Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

  • Jesus Walks on Water

That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the shore to wait for him.
  • got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
  • But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum.
  • Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.
  • Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the sea grew very rough.
  • So when they had rowed about [c]three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.
  • They had rowed three or four milesd when suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat. They were terrified,
  • But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
  • but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!e
  • Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
  • Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination!
  • The Bread from Heaven

On the following day, when the people who were standing on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except [d]that one [e]which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone —

  • Jesus, the Bread of Life

The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them.
  • however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after the Lord had given thanks —
  • Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten.
  • when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
  • So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him.
  • And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”
  • They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
  • Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
  • Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.
  • Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
  • But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Manf can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
  • Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
  • They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”
  • Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
  • Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
  • Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do?
  • They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do?
  • Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
  • After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’g
  • Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
  • Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.
  • For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
  • The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
  • Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
  • “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”
  • And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
  • Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
  • But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.
  • But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me.
  • All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will [f]by no means cast out.
  • However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.
  • For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
  • For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.
  • This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.
  • And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day.
  • And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
  • For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”
  • Rejected by His Own

The Jews then [g]complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.”
  • Then the peopleh began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
  • And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
  • They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
  • Jesus therefore answered and said to them, [h]“Do not murmur among yourselves.
  • But Jesus replied, “Stop complaining about what I said.
  • No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
  • For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
  • It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who [i]has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
  • As it is written in the Scriptures,i ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.
  • Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
  • (Not that anyone has ever seen the Father; only I, who was sent from God, have seen him.)
  • Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes [j]in Me has everlasting life.
  • “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.
  • I am the bread of life.
  • Yes, I am the bread of life!
  • Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
  • Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died.
  • This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
  • Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die.
  • I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
  • I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”
  • The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”
  • Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.
  • Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
  • So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.
  • Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
  • But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day.
  • For My flesh is [k]food indeed, and My blood is [l]drink indeed.
  • For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
  • He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
  • Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
  • As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
  • I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me.
  • This is the bread which came down from heaven — not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”
  • I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.”
  • These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.
  • He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
  • Many Disciples Turn Away

Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a [m]hard saying; who can understand it?”

  • Many Disciples Desert Jesus

Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”
  • When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples [n]complained about this, He said to them, “Does this [o]offend you?
  • Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining, so he said to them, “Does this offend you?
  • What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before?
  • Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?
  • It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
  • The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
  • But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.
  • But some of you do not believe me.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn’t believe, and he knew who would betray him.)
  • And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
  • Then he said, “That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.”
  • From that time many of His disciples went [p]back and walked with Him no more.
  • At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.
  • Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
  • Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?”
  • But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
  • Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.
  • Also we have come to believe and know that You are the [q]Christ, the Son of the living God.”
  • We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.j
  • Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
  • Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you, but one is a devil.”
  • He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
  • He was speaking of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, one of the Twelve, who would later betray him.
