Paul’s Defense at Jerusalem

“Brethren and fathers, hear my defense before you now.”

Мужі-брати і батьки! Вислухайте тепер моє виправдання перед вами.

And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent.
Then he said:

Почувши, що заговорив до них єврейською мовою, ще більше притихли. А він сказав:

“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today.

Я — чоловік-юдей, який народився в Тарсі в Килікії, вихований у цьому ж місті, біля ніг Гамалиїла, докладно навчений батьківського закону: я — ревнитель Бога, як усі ви сьогодні.

I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished.

як засвідчать про мене всі старші й первосвященик. Від них я одержав листи до братів у Дамаску й пішов, аби зв’язаними привести в Єрусалим для покарання тих, які там були.

“Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me.

Але сталося, коли я йшов і наближався до Дамаска, десь опівдні раптом з неба засяяло довкола мене велике світло.

And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’

Я впав на землю і почув голос, який говорив мені: Савле, Савле, чому Мене переслідуєш?

8

So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’

Я відповів: Хто Ти, Господи? Сказав мені: Я — Ісус Назарянин, Якого ти переслідуєш.

“And those who were with me indeed saw the light [a]and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me.

А ті, хто був зі мною, побачили світло [і перелякалися], але голосу, який говорив до мене, не чули.

10

So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.’

Я запитав: Господи, що мені робити? А Господь промовив до мене: Встань, іди в Дамаск, а там скажуть тобі про все, що потрібно тобі робити!

And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

І оскільки від того яскравого світла я не бачив, то ті, хто був зі мною, вели мене в Дамаск за руку.

“Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there,

А один Ананій, побожний, згідно із Законом, муж, про якого добре свідчать усі юдеї — мешканці [Дамаска], —

13

came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him.

прийшов до мене, став і сказав мені: Савле, брате, прозрій! І в тій хвилині я побачив його.

14

Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth.

14

Він же сказав: Бог наших батьків призначив тебе, щоб ти пізнав Його волю і побачив Праведного та почув голос з Його уст,

15

For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.

15

бо ти будеш Йому свідком перед усіма людьми про те, що побачив і почув.

16

And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

16

А тепер чого очікуєш? Устань, охрестися та обмий свої гріхи, прикликавши Його Ім’я!

17

“Now it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance

І сталося, коли я повернувся до Єрусалима і молився в храмі, — в пориві захоплення

18

and saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.’

18

я побачив Його… Він говорив до мене: Поспіши, швидше виходь з Єрусалима, бо не приймуть твого свідчення про Мене!

19

So I said, ‘Lord, they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believe on You.

19

А я сказав: Господи, вони самі знають, що я кидав до в’язниць та бив по синагогах тих, які вірять у Тебе,

20

And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting [b]to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’

20

а коли лилася кров Твого свідка Степана, то я сам стояв і, схвалюючи [його вбивство], стеріг одяг тих, які його вбивали!

21

Then He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”

21

Та Він сказав мені: Іди, тому що Я пошлю тебе далеко — до народів.

Paul’s Roman Citizenship

And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!”

Слухали його аж до цього слова, а тоді піднесли свої голоси, вигукуючи: Геть такого із землі, бо не годиться йому жити!

Then, as they cried out and [c]tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air,

23

Вони кричали, кидали одяг і жбурляли порох у повітря.

24

the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him.

24

Тож тисяцький звелів відвести його до казарми, наказавши бичуванням допитати його, щоби зрозуміти, з якої причини так кричали проти нього.

25

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?”

А коли розтягли його ременями, то Павло сказав сотникові, який стояв: Хіба вам дозволено бичувати чоловіка — римлянина і не засудженого?

26

When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, “Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.”

26

Почувши, сотник підійшов до тисяцького й сповістив, кажучи: [Вважай], що хочеш робити, бо цей чоловік — римлянин!

27

Then the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?”
He said, “Yes.”

27

Наблизившись, тисяцький запитав його: Скажи мені, ти римлянин? Він відказав: Так.

28

The commander answered, “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.”
And Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.”

А тисяцький відповів: Я набув це громадянство за великі гроші. Павло ж сказав: А я в ньому й народився.

29

Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

Тоді від нього негайно відступили ті, які мали його допитувати, а тисяцький налякався, довідавшись, що він римлянин і що він його зв’язав.

The Sanhedrin Divided

The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

А наступного дня, бажаючи краще дізнатися, у чому його звинувачують юдеї, звільнив його [з кайданів] і наказав, аби прийшли первосвященики й увесь синедріон [1]. І, привівши Павла, поставив його перед ними.
