James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.

Profiting from Trials

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,

Майте, бра́ти мої, повну радість, коли впадаєте в усілякі випробо́вування,

knowing that the testing of your faith produces [a]patience.

знаючи, що досвідчення вашої віри дає терпеливість.

But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

А терпеливість нехай має чин доскона́лий, щоб ви досконалі та бездоганні були́, і недостачі ні в чому не мали.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

А якщо кому з вас не стачає мудрости, нехай просить від Бога, що всім дає просто, та не докоряє, — і бу́де вона йому да́на.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

Але нехай просить із вірою, без жодного су́мніву. Бо хто має су́мнів, той подібний до морської хвилі, яку жене й кидає вітер.

7

For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

Нехай бо така люди́на не гадає, що дістане що́ від Господа.

he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Двоєдушна люди́на непостійна на всіх дорогах своїх.

The Perspective of Rich and Poor

Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,

А понижений брат нехай хвалиться висо́кістю своєю,

10

but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.

10

а багатий — пони́женням своїм, бо він промине, як той цвіт трав'яни́й, —

11

For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

бо сонце зійшло зо спеко́тою, і траву посушило, — і відпав цвіт її, і зникла краса́ її виду. Так само зів'яне й багатий у дорогах своїх!

Loving God Under Trials

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Блаженна люди́на, що ви́терпить пробу, бо, бувши ви́пробувана, дістане вінця життя, якого Господь обіцяв тим, хто любить Його.

13

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

Ви́пробовуваний, хай не каже ніхто: „Я від Бога споку́шуваний“. Бо Бог злом не спокушується, і нікого Він Сам не спокушує.

14

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.

14

Але кожен спокушується, як на́диться й зво́диться пожадливістю власною.

15

Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

15

Пожадли́вість пото́му, зачавши, народжує гріх, а зроблений гріх народжує смерть.

16

Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

16

Не обма́нюйтесь, брати мої любі!

17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

17

Усяке добре дава́ння та дар досконалий похо́дить згори від Отця світил, що в Нього нема переміни чи тіні відміни.

18

Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

18

Захотівши, Він нас породив словом правди, щоб ми стали якимсь первопло́дом творів Його.

Qualities Needed in Trials

[c]So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

19

Отож, мої брати́ любі, нехай буде кожна людина швидка́ послухати, забарна́ говорити, повільна на гнів.

20

for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

20

Бо гнів лю́дський не чинить праведности Божої.

21

Doers — Not Hearers Only

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and [d]overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

21

Тому́ то відкиньте всіляку нечисть та залишок злоби́, і прийміть із ла́гідністю всіяне слово, що може спасти ваші душі.

22

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

22

Будьте ж викона́вцями слова, а не слухачами самими, що себе самих обманюють.

23

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;

23

Бо хто слуха́ч слова, а не викона́вець, той подібний люди́ні, що риси обличчя свого розглядає у дзе́ркалі, —

24

for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

24

бо розгляне себе та й віді́йде, і зараз забуде, яка вона є.

25

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

25

А хто заглядає в зако́н досконалий, закон волі, і в нім пробуває, той не буде забу́дько слухач, але виконавець ді́ла, — і він буде блаженний у дія́нні своїм!

26

If anyone [e]among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.

Коли ж хто гада́є, що він побожний, і свого язика не вгамо́вує, та своє серце обманює, — марна́ побожність того́!

27

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

27

Чиста й непорочна побожність перед Богом і Отцем оця: згля́нутися над си́ротами та вдови́цями в утисках їхніх, себе берегти чистим від світу.
