Three Cities of Refuge

“When the Lord your God has cut off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses,

1

Коли Господь, Бог твій, повигублює народи, що Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі їхній край, і ти повиганяєш їх, і осядеш по їхніх містах та по їхніх домах,

2

you shall separate three cities for yourself in the midst of your land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

то три місті відділиш собі в сере́дині свого кра́ю, що Господь, Бог твій, дає його тобі на володі́ння.

3

You shall prepare roads for yourself, and divide into three parts the territory of your land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, that any manslayer may flee there.

3

Приготуєш собі дорогу, і поділиш натроє землю твого кра́ю, що Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі на спа́док, і це буде на втікання туди кожного убійника.

4

“And this is the case of the manslayer who flees there, that he may live: Whoever kills his neighbor [a]unintentionally, not having hated him in time past —

А оце справа убійника, що втече туди й буде жити: хто вб'є свого ближнього ненаро́ком, а він не був ворогом його від учора й позавчора;

5

as when a man goes to the woods with his neighbor to cut timber, and his hand swings a stroke with the ax to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies — he shall flee to one of these cities and live;

або хто ввійде з своїм ближнім до лісу рубати дере́ва, і розмахнеться рука його з сокирою, щоб зрубати де́рево, а залізо спаде з топори́ща й попаде в його бли́жнього, і той помре, то він утече до одного з тих міст, і буде жити,

lest the avenger of blood, while his anger is hot, pursue the manslayer and overtake him, because the way is long, and kill him, though he was not deserving of death, since he had not hated the victim in time past.

щоб не гнався месник за кров за убійником, коли розпалиться серце його, і щоб не догнав його, якщо буде довга та дорога, і не вбив його, хоч він не підлягає смерті, бо не був він ворогом його від учора й позавчора.

Therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall separate three cities for yourself.’

Тому то я наказую тобі, говорячи: „Три міста відділиш собі“.

8

“Now if the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as He swore to your fathers, and gives you the land which He promised to give to your fathers,

А якщо Господь, Бог твій, розши́рить границю твою, як присягнув був батькам твоїм, і дасть тобі всю оцю землю, що говорив був дати батькам твоїм,

9

and if you keep all these commandments and do them, which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and to walk always in His ways, then you shall add three more cities for yourself besides these three,

коли ти будеш доде́ржувати всі ці заповіді, щоб виконувати їх, що я наказую тобі сьогодні, — щоб любити Господа, Бога свого, і щоб ходити дорогами Його всі дні, — то додаси собі ще три міста понад ті три,

10

lest innocent blood be shed in the midst of your land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and thus guilt of bloodshed be upon you.

щоб не була́ пролита непови́нна кров серед твого кра́ю, що Господь, Бог твій, дає тобі на спа́док, і не буде на тобі кров.

11

“But if anyone hates his neighbor, lies in wait for him, rises against him and strikes him mortally, so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities,

А коли хто бу́де нена́видіти свого ближнього, і буде чатувати на нього, і повстане на нього та й уб'є його, і той помре, і втече він до одного з тих міст,

12

then the elders of his city shall send and bring him from there, and deliver him over to the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

12

то пошлють старші́ його міста, і ві́зьмуть його звідти, і дадуть його в руку месника крови, і він помре.

13

Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall [b]put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

Не змилосе́рдиться око твоє над ним, і ти усу́неш кров неповинного з Ізраїля, і буде добре тобі.

14

Property Boundaries

“You shall not remove your neighbor’s landmark, which the men of old have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

Не пересунеш межі свого ближнього, яку розмежува́ли предки в наді́лі твоїм, яке посядеш ти в краю́, що Господь, Бог твій, дає його тобі на володі́ння.

15

The Law Concerning Witnesses

“One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.

15

Не стане один свідок на кого для всякої провини і для всякого гріха́, — у кожнім гріху́, що згрішить, на слова́ двох свідків або на слова трьох свідків відбу́деться справа.

16

If a false witness rises against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,

Коли стане на кого неправдивий свідок, щоб сві́дчити проти нього підступно,

17

then both men in the controversy shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who serve in those days.

17

то стануть двоє цих людей, що мають суперечку, перед лицем Господнім, перед священиками та суддями, що будуть у тих днях.

18

And the judges shall make careful inquiry, and indeed, if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother,

18

I судді добре дослідять, а ось свідок — неправдивий той свідок, неправду говорив на брата свого,

19

then you shall do to him as he thought to have done to his brother; so you shall put away the evil from among you.

19

то зробите йому так, як він замишляв був зробити своєму бра́тові, — і вигубиш зло з-посеред себе.

20

And those who remain shall hear and fear, and hereafter they shall not again commit such evil among you.

20

А позосталі будуть слу́хати, і будуть боятися, і більш вже не будуть робити серед себе такого, як та річ зла.

21

Your eye shall not pity: life shall be for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

21

І не змилосе́рдиться око твоє: життя за життя, око за око, зуб за зуба, рука за ру́ку, нога за но́гу.
