Тож кажу́ я: поки спадкоє́мець дити́на, — він нічим від раба не різни́ться, хоч він пан над усім,
but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.
але під опікуна́ми та керівника́ми знаходиться він аж до ча́су, що визначив ба́тько.
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.
Так і ми, — поки дітьми́ були, то були поневолені стихі́ями світу.
Як настало ж ви́повнення ча́су, Бог послав Свого Сина, що родився від жони, та став під Зако́ном,
to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
щоб викупити підзако́нних, щоб усино́влення ми прийняли́.
А що ви сини́, Бог послав у ваші серця Духа Сина Свого, що викликує: „Авва, Отче!“
Тому ти вже не раб, але син. А як син, то й спадкоє́мець Божий через Христа.
Fears for the Church
But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods.

Та тоді, не знаючи Бога, служили ви тим, що з істоти бога́ми вони не були́.
But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?
А тепер, як пізнали ви Бога, чи краще — як Бог вас пізнав, — як вертаєтесь знов до слаби́х та вбогих стихі́й, яким хочете знов, як давніше, служити?
You observe days and months and seasons and years.
Ви вважаєте пильно на дні та на місяці, і на по́ри та ро́ки.
I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.
Я боюся за вас, чи не да́рмо я працював коло вас?..
Brethren, I urge you to become like me, for I became like you. You have not injured me at all.
Прошу́ я вас, браття, — будьте, як я, бо й я такий самий, як ви. Нічим ви мене не покри́вдили!
You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first.
І знаєте ви, що в не́мочі тіла я перше звіщав вам Єва́нгелію,
ви ж моєю спокусою в тілі моїм не пого́рдували, і мене не відкинули, але, немов а́нгола Божого, ви прийняли́ мене, як Христа Ісуса!
Тож де ваше тодішнє блаже́нство? Свідкую бо вам, що якби було можна, то ви вибрали б очі свої та мені віддали́ б!
Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?
Чи ж я став для вас ворогом, правду гово́рячи вам?
They zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them.
Недобре пильнують про вас, але вас відлучити хо́чуть, щоб ви пильнували про них.
But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you.
То добре, — пильнувати про добре постійно, а не тільки тоді, як прихо́джу до вас.
My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you,
Ді́тки мої, — я зно́ву для вас терплю́ муки поро́ду, поки образ Христа не віді́б'ється в вас!
I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone; for I have doubts about you.
Я хотів би тепер бути в вас та змінити свій голос, бо маю я су́мнів за вас.
Two Covenants
Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law?

Скажіть мені ви, що хочете бути під Зако́ном: чи не слухаєтесь ви Зако́ну?
For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman.
Бо написано: „Мав Авраам двох синів, одно́го від рабині, а другого від вільної“.
But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,
Але той, хто був від рабині, народився за тілом, а хто був від вільної, — за обі́тницею.
Розуміти це треба інакше, бо це два заповіти: один від гори Сіна́й, що в ра́бство народжує, а він — то Аґа́р.
for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children —
Бо Аґа́р — то гора Сіна́й в Ара́бії, а відповідає сучасному Єрусалимові, який у ра́бстві з своїми дітьми́.
but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.
А ви́шній Єрусали́м — вільний, він мати всім нам!
For it is written:
“Rejoice, O barren,
You who do not bear!
Break forth and shout,
You who are not in labor!
For the desolate has many more children
Than she who has a husband.”

Бо написано: „Звеселися, неплідна, ти, що не родиш! Гукай та викликуй ти, що в поро́ді не мучилась, бо в полишеної значно більше дітей, ніж у тієї, що має вона чоловіка!“
Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.
А ви, браття, діти обі́тниці за Ісаком!
But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.
Але як і тоді, — хто родився за тілом, переслідував тих, хто родився за духом, так само й тепер.
Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.”
Та що каже Писа́ння? „Прожени рабиню й сина її, бо не буде спадкува́ти син рабині ра́зом із сином вільної“.
