The Northern Conquest

And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,

Israel Defeats the Northern Armies

When King Jabin of Hazor heard what had happened, he sent messages to the following kings: King Jobab of Madon; the king of Shimron; the king of Acshaph;

and to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the plain south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,

all the kings of the northern hill country; the kings in the Jordan Valley south of Galileea; the kings in the Galilean foothillsb; the kings of Naphoth-dor on the west;

3

to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the mountains, and the Hivite below Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

the kings of Canaan, both east and west; the kings of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites in the towns on the slopes of Mount Hermon in the land of Mizpah.

So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots.

All these kings came out to fight. Their combined armies formed a vast horde. And with all their horses and chariots, they covered the landscape like the sand on the seashore.

And when all these kings had [a]met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

The kings joined forces and established their camp around the water near Merom to fight against Israel.

But the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them. By this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel as dead men. Then you must cripple their horses and burn their chariots.”

So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and they attacked them.

So Joshua and all his fighting men traveled to the water near Merom and attacked suddenly.

And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who defeated them and chased them to [b]Greater Sidon, to the [c]Brook Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward; they attacked them until they left none of them remaining.

And the LORD gave them victory over their enemies. The Israelites chased them as far as Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward into the valley of Mizpah, until not one enemy warrior was left alive.

So Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

Then Joshua crippled the horses and burned all the chariots, as the LORD had instructed.

10

Joshua turned back at that time and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor was formerly the head of all those kingdoms.

Joshua then turned back and captured Hazor and killed its king. (Hazor had at one time been the capital of all these kingdoms.)

And they struck all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. There was none left breathing. Then he burned Hazor with fire.

The Israelites completely destroyedc every living thing in the city, leaving no survivors. Not a single person was spared. And then Joshua burned the city.

So all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.

Joshua slaughtered all the other kings and their people, completely destroying them, just as Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded.

13

But as for the cities that stood on their [d]mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only, which Joshua burned.

But the Israelites did not burn any of the towns built on mounds except Hazor, which Joshua burned.

14

And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the children of Israel took as booty for themselves; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left none breathing.

And the Israelites took all the plunder and livestock of the ravaged towns for themselves. But they killed all the people, leaving no survivors.

15

As the Lord had commanded Moses His servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. [e]He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. And Joshua did as he was told, carefully obeying all the commands that the LORD had given to Moses.

Summary of Joshua’s Conquests

Thus Joshua took all this land: the mountain country, all the South, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, and the Jordan [f]plain — the mountains of Israel and its lowlands,

So Joshua conquered the entire region — the hill country, the entire Negev, the whole area around the town of Goshen, the western foothills, the Jordan Valley,d the mountains of Israel, and the Galilean foothills.

from [g]Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, even as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, and struck them down and killed them.

The Israelite territory now extended all the way from Mount Halak, which leads up to Seir in the south, as far north as Baal-gad at the foot of Mount Hermon in the valley of Lebanon. Joshua killed all the kings of those territories,

Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.

waging war for a long time to accomplish this.

There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in battle.

No one in this region made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites of Gibeon. All the others were defeated.

20

For it was of the Lord [h]to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

For the LORD hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

21

And at that time Joshua came and cut off the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.

During this period Joshua destroyed all the descendants of Anak, who lived in the hill country of Hebron, Debir, Anab, and the entire hill country of Judah and Israel. He killed them all and completely destroyed their towns.

None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.

None of the descendants of Anak were left in all the land of Israel, though some still remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested from war.

So Joshua took control of the entire land, just as the LORD had instructed Moses. He gave it to the people of Israel as their special possession, dividing the land among the tribes. So the land finally had rest from war.
