New King James Version

English Standard Version

  • Qualifications for High Priesthood

For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
  • For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
  • He can [a]have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.
  • He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.
  • Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins.
  • Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
  • And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.
  • And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
  • A Priest Forever

So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:
    “You are My Son,
    Today I have begotten You.”
  • So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,
    “You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you”;
  • As He also says in another place:
    “You are a priest forever
    According to the order of Melchizedek”;
  • as he says also in another place,
    “You are a priest forever,
    after the order of Melchizedek.”
  • who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,
  • In the days of his flesh, Jesusa offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
  • though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
  • Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
  • And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
  • And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
  • called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”
  • being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
  • of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
  • Warning Against Apostasy

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
  • Spiritual Immaturity

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the [b]oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
  • For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
  • For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
  • for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
  • But solid food belongs to those who are [c]of full age, that is, those who by reason of [d]use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
  • But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
