Jephthah’s Conflict with Ephraim

Then the men of Ephraim [a]gathered together, crossed over toward Zaphon, and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you with fire!”

Поскликалися ж Ефраїмії й двинули вони од півночі та промовили до Ефтая: Чого се ти ходив на війну проти Аммонїїв, та й не покликав нас із собою? Оце ж пустимо з димом твій будинок вкупі з тобою.

And Jephthah said to them, “My people and I were in a great struggle with the people of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not deliver me out of their hands.

І відказав їм Ефтай: Я й мій народ тяжко ворогували з Аммонїями; я вас кликав, та ви не рятували мене з їх потали.

So when I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hands and crossed over against the people of Ammon; and the Lord delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?”

Бачивши ж я, що ти не хочеш товаришувати зо мною, одважив я мою душу та й двинув на Аммонїїв, і Господь подав їх менї в руки. Чого ж оце наступаєте ви на мене війною?

Now Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said, “You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites and among the Manassites.”

І покликав Ефтай усїх Галаадїїв та вдарив на Ефраїміїв, і побили Галаадїї Ефраїміїв, вони ж бо й приговорювали: Ефраїмські втекачі ви: Галаад бо міститься між Ефраїмом і між Манассієм.

The Gileadites seized the fords of the Jordan before the Ephraimites arrived. And when any Ephraimite who escaped said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead would say to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No,”

І обсїли Галаадїї Йорданські броди перед Ефраїміями. Як же хто з Ефраїмійських втекачів говорив: Дайте менї перебрести, то питали Галаадїї в його: Чи ти не Ефраїмій? Коли він відказав: Нї,

then they would say to him, “Then say, ‘Shibboleth’!”[b] And he would say, “Sibboleth,” for he could not [c]pronounce it right. Then they would take him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. There fell at that time forty-two thousand Ephraimites.

То вони йому: А скажи ж: Шибболет, (колос), а він каже: Сибболет, бо не вмів доладу вимовити. От вони вхоплять його та й зітнуть на Йорданьському броду. Так полягло тодї Ефраїміїв сорок і дві тисячі.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried among the cities of Gilead.

І судив Ефтай Ізраїля шість год, і вмер Ефтай Галаадїй і поховано його в которомусь городї Галаадському.

Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon

After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.

Після його був суддею Ізраїля Абезан із Бетлеєму.

He had thirty sons. And he gave away thirty daughters in marriage, and brought in thirty daughters from elsewhere for his sons. He judged Israel seven years.

У сього було трийцять синів, а віддав він трийцятеро дочок на чужу сторону, і привів синам своїм трийцятеро дочок із чужої сторони, й судив Ізраїля сїм год.

Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.

Потім умер Абезан, і поховано його в Бетлеємі.

After him, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel. He judged Israel ten years.

Після нього судив Ізраїля Забулонїй Елон, а судив він Ізраїля десять лїт.

And Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.

After him, Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.

Після його судив Ізраїля Пиратонїй Абдон Гиллеленко.

He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy young donkeys. He judged Israel eight years.

У сього було сорок синів і трийцятеро внуків, що їздили на сїмдесятьох ослятах. Він судив Ізраїля вісїм год.

Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mountains of the Amalekites.

І вмер Пиратонїй Абдон Гиллеленко, і поховано його в Пиратонї в Ефраїм-землї, на горі Амалекійській.
