The Nations Remaining in the Land

Now these are the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not [a]known any of the wars in Canaan

1

Оце ж ті народи, що зоставив Господь, щоб випробовувати ними Ізраїля і всїх тих, що не знали війни за Канаан,

2

(this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it),

На те тілько, щоб навчались воюватись сини Ізрайлеві що першої війни не знали:

namely, five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

Пять князїв Филистимських, усї Канаанїї, Сидонїї й Гевії, що жили на Ливан-горах від гори Баал-Гермон до ввіходу в Емат.

And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to [b]know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

А оставив їх на те, щоб випробувати Ізраїля і довідатись, чи слухати муть вони заповідей Господнїх, що дано батькам їх через Мойсея.

Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Оце ж і жили сини Ізраїля серед Канаанїїв, Гетїїв, Аморіїв, Ферезіїв, Гевіїв і Евузіїв,

And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

Брали за себе їх дочки і віддавали свої дочки за їх синів, і служили їх богам.

Othniel

So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and [c]Asherahs.

7

І витворяли сини Ізрайлеві зло перед Господом, і забували Господа, Бога свого, і служили Баалам та Астартам.

8

Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.

І запалав гнїв Господень на Ізраїля, так що він оддав їх на поталу Хузанові Русатаїмові, цареві Мезопотамїї; і були сини Ізрайлеві підневоленими Хузанові Русатаїмові вісїм год.

When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

І взивали тодї сини Ізрайлеві до Господа, і Господь вознїс їм спасителя і той вирятував їх, — Отониїла Кеназенка, сина меншого брата Калебового.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim.

І зійшов на нього дух Господень і допоміг йому судити Ізраїля. І так виступив він у поход, і подав йому Господь на поталу Хузана Русатаїма, царя Мезопотамського, і взяв він гору над Хузаном Русатаїмом.

So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

І втїшалась супокоєм земля сорок год. І вмер Отониїл Кеназенко.

Ehud

And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.

Та сини Ізраїля знов чинили те, що було не до вподоби Господеві. Тодї дав Господь Еглонові, цареві Моабійському, перевагу над Ізраїлем; бо чинили вони те, що було не до вподоби Господеві.

13

Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and [d]defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms.

Скупив він до себе Аморіїв та Амалекіїв, побив Ізраїля та й підневолив Пальмовий город.

14

So the children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

14

І були Ізрайлитяне підневоленими Еглонові, цареві Моабійському, вісїмнайцять год.

15

But when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab.

Заквилили тодї сини Ізраїля до Господа, і Господь вознїс їм визвольника, Аода, сина Герового, сина Еминїєвого, лївака.Через нього то послали Ізрайлитяне данину Еглонові, цареві Моабійському.

16

Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh.

16

Аод же наготовив собі меча з двома лезвами (вістрями) на лікоть завдовжки, і підперезав його собі під одежою на правому боцї.

17

So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.)

17

От і принїс він Еглонові, цареві Моабійському, данину. Еглон же та був собі вельми пузатий чоловік.

18

And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute.

Віддавши данину, відослав Аод людей, що несли данину,

19

But he himself turned back from the [e]stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”
He said, “Keep silence!” And all who attended him went out from him.

19

Сам же вернувсь до виструганих ідолів у Галгалї і звелїв сказати Еглонові: Є в мене таємне слово до тебе, царю. Той повелїв: Тихо! і вийшли геть усї, що стояли кругом.

20

So Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” So he arose from his seat.

Як увійшов до нього Аод, він седїв один у прохолоднїй хатї своїй, і каже Аод: Маю Боже слово до тебе, царю! Той піднявсь із свого сїдалища.

21

Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly.

21

Тодї вхопив Аод лївою рукою меча з правого боку свого, та й уткнув йому в тїло,

22

Even the [f]hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out.

22

Так що за лезвами вгрязло й держально, і жир обняв вістрє, бо не витяг він меча назад із його тїла, і він досяг задньої части.

23

Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

23

Вийшов тодї Аод, зачинив двері верхньої хати за собою і засунув засовом.

24

When he had gone out, [g]Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, “He is probably attending[h] to his needs in the cool chamber.”

24

Як вийшов він, прийшли дворяне і, бачивши, що двері верхньої хати засунено, подумали: Певно він у своїй прохолоднїй хатї робить потріб свою.

25

So they waited till they were embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them. And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor.

Так ждали довго. Як же він не відчиняв усе ще дверій у верхній хатї, взяли ключа та й відомкнули, і от пан їх лежав на землї мертвий.

But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the [i]stone images and escaped to Seirah.

26

Покіль же вони гаялись, Аод утїк, пройшов мимо виструганих ідолїв і уйшов у Сеїрат.

27

And it happened, when he arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and [j]he led them.

27

Вернувшися ж додому, ударив на Ефраїм горах у трубу, і спустились сини Ізраїля з ним із гір, а він поперед них.

28

Then he said to them, “Follow me, for the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him, seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.

І повелїв їм: Сюди до мене! бо подав Господь наші вороги Моабії нам на поталу. Пустились тодї вони за ним, і пооблягали Йорданьські броди до Моабу і не пускали нїкого перейти.

29

And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped.

29

І побили вони тодї Моабіїв до десяти тисяч душ вельми сильних і здорових людей, так що нїхто не втїк.

30

So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years.

30

Тодї мусїли Моабії нагнутись під руку Ізраїлеві. І було мирно в землї вісїмдесять год. Аод же судив їх до смерти.

Shamgar

After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.

31

Після нього виступив Самгар; сей побив шістьсот Филистимів плуговим лемішем, і він також спасав Ізраїля.
