The Family of Elkanah

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of [a]Elihu, the son of [b]Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

I був один чоловік із Раматаїм-Цофіму, з Єфремових гір, а ім'я́ йому Елкана, син Єрохама, сина Ілі́я, сина Тоху, сина Цуфа, єфре́млянин.

And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

А він мав дві жінки, — ім'я́ одній Анна, а ім'я другій Пеніна. І були в Пеніни діти, а в Анни дітей не було́.

This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there.

А той чоловік рік-у-рік ходив із свого міста до Шіло́, щоб вклонятися та прино́сити жертви Господу Савао́ту. А там два Ілі́єві сини, — Гофні та Пінхас, були священиками для Господа.

And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.

І як бував той день, і Елкана приносив жертви, то він давав своїй жінці Пеніні й усім синам її та до́чкам її частини,

But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the Lord had closed her womb.

а Анні давав частину подвійну, бо любив її. Та Господь замкнув її утро́бу.

And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb.

А її супе́рниця розпалювала їй гнів, щоб докучати їй, бо Господь замкнув її утро́бу.

So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

І так робив він рік-у-рік, коли вона вхо́дила до Господнього дому, а та так гніви́ла її. І вона плакала й не їла.

Hannah’s Vow

Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

І сказав їй чоловік її Елкана: „Анно, чого ти плачеш і чому́ не їси? І чого сумне́ твоє серце? Чи ж я не ліпший тобі за десятьох синів?“

So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the [c]tabernacle of the Lord.

І встала Анна по їді та по питті в Шіло́, а священик Ілі́й сидів на стільці при бічно́му одві́рку Господнього храму.

And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and [d]wept in anguish.

А вона була ско́рбна духом, і молилася до Господа та плакала гірко.

11

Then she made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”

І склала вона обі́тницю, та й сказала: „Господи Савао́те, якщо дійсно спогля́неш на біду Твоєї невільниці, і згадаєш мене, і не забудеш Своєї невільниці, і даси Своїй невільниці наща́дка чоловічої статі, то я дам його Господе́ві на всі дні життя його, а бритва не торкнетья його голови“.

And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth.

І сталося, коли вона довго молилася перед Господнім лицем, то Ілі́й пильнував за її устами.

13

Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

А Анна — вона говорила в серці своїм: тільки гу́би її порушувалися, а голос її не був чутий. І вважав її Ілій за п'я́ну.

So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”

І сказав до неї Ілі́й: „Аж доки ти будеш п'я́ною? Ви́тверезись зо свого вина!“

15

But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.

А Анна відповіла та й сказала: „Ні, пане мій, — я жінка скорбна духом, а вина та п'янко́го напо́ю не пила́ я. І я вилила душу свою перед Господнім лицем.

16

Do not consider your maidservant a wicked[e] woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”

Не вважай своєї невільниці за негідницю, бо я говорила аж доти з великої своєї скорботи та з туги́ своєї“.

17

Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”

17

І відповів Ілі́й та й сказав: „Іди з миром! А Бог Ізраїлів дасть тобі бажа́ння твоє, яке ти від Нього жадала“.

18

And she said, “Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

18

А вона сказала: „Нехай невільниця твоя зна́йде милість в оча́х твоїх!“ І пішла та жінка своєю дорогою, та й їла, а обличчя її не було вже сумне.

19

Samuel Is Born and Dedicated

Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her.

І встала вона рано вранці, і вклонилася перед Господнім лицем. І вернулися вони, і ввійшли до свого дому до Рами. І Елкана пізнав свою жінку Анну, а Господь згадав про неї.

20

So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name [f]Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”

І сталося по році, і завагітніла Анна, та й сина породила. І назвала вона ім'я йому: Самуїл, бо від Господа жадала його.

21

Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and his vow.

І пішов той чоловік Елкана та ввесь дім його вчинити для Господа річну́ жертву та обі́тниці свої.

22

But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the Lord and remain there forever.”

22

А Анна не пішла, бо сказала до чоловіка свого: „Аж коли буде відлу́чений цей хлопчик, то відведу́ його, — і він з'я́виться перед Господнім лицем, і наза́вжди позоста́неться там!“

23

So Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the Lord [g]establish [h]His word.” Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

І сказав ій чоловік її Елкана: „Роби те, що добре в оча́х твоїх! Залишайся, аж поки відлу́чиш його, тільки нехай виконає Господь Своє слово“. І залишалась та жінка, і годувала свого сина, аж поки вона відлучила його.

24

Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with [i]three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord in Shiloh. And the child was young.

А коли відлучила, то повела його з собою та з трьома́ бичками й одною ефо́ю муки, і бурдюко́м вина, і привела́ його до Господнього дому до Шіло́. А той хлопчик був ще мали́й.

25

Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli.

25

І зарізали бичка, і привели́ того хлопчика до Ілі́я.

26

And she said, “O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord.

26

І вона сказала: „О, пане мій, як жива душа твоя, мій пане, — я та жінка, що стояла з тобою отут, щоб молитися Господе́ві.

27

For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.

27

Я молилася за дитину цю, — і Господь дав мені жада́ння моє, що я просила від Нього.

28

Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be [j]lent to the Lord.” So they worshiped the Lord there.

28

А тепер я віддаю́ його Господе́ві на всі дні, скільки він жада́ний для Господа“. І вклонилася там Господе́ві.
