Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.
І вибрав собі Саул три тисячі з Ізраїля, — дві тисячі були з Саулом у Міхмаші та на горі Бет-Елу, а тисяча були з Йоната́ном у Веніяминовій Ґів'ї. А решту народу відпустив він кожного до наметів своїх.
And Jonathan attacked the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”
І побив Йоната́н филистимського намісника, що в Ґеві. І почули це филисти́мляни, а Саул засурми́в у сурму́ по всьому Кра́ю, говорячи: „Нехай почують євреї!“
А ввесь Ізраїль чув, говорячи: „Саул побив филистимського намісника, і тим Ізраїль став нена́висним серед филисти́млян“. І скликаний був народ за Саулом до Ґілґалу.
А филисти́мляни були зібрані воювати з Ізраїлем, — тридцять тисяч возів і шість тисяч верхівці́в, а народу, щодо численности, як піску на морському березі. І вийшли вони, і таборува́ли в Міхмаші, на схід Бет-Авену.
When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits.
А Ізра́їльтянин побачив, що скру́тно йому, що наро́д був пригно́блений, — і народ ховався по пече́рах, і по щі́линах, і по ске́лях, і по льоха́х та по яма́х.
And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead.

Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
І чекав він сім день умо́вленого ча́су, що призначив Самуїл, та Самуїл не прийшов до Ґілґа́лу, — і народ став розбігатися від нього.
So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering.
І сказав Саул: „Приведіть до мене призначене на цілопалення та мирні жертви“. І він приніс цілопа́лення.

And Samuel said, “What have you done?”

then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”
І я сказав: Тепер филисти́мляни зі́йдуть до мене до Ґілґалу, а Господнього лиця я ще не вблагав. І я вирішив, і приніс цілопа́лення!“
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
І сказав Самуїл до Саула: „Ти зробив нерозумне! Не послухав ти наказів Господа, Бога свого, що наказав був тобі, бо тепер Господь міцно поставив би аж навіки твоє царство над Ізраїлем.
But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
А тепер царство твоє не буде стояти, — Господь пошукав Собі мужа за серцем Своїм, і Господь наказав йому бути володарем над народом Своїм, бо ти не ви́конав, що́ наказав був тобі Господь“.
І встав Самуїл, і зійшов із Ґілґалу до Веніяминової Ґів'ї. А Саул перелічив народ, що знахо́дився з ним, — близько шости сотень чоловіка.
І Саул і син його Йоната́н та народ, що знахо́дився з ним, сиділи в Веніяминовій Ґеві, филисти́мляни ж таборува́ли в Міхмаші.
Then raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned onto the road to Ophrah, to the land of Shual,
І вийшли руїнники з филистимського табо́ру трьома́ відділами: один відділ звертається на офрійську дорогу до кра́ю Шуал,
another company turned to the road to Beth Horon, and another company turned to the road of the border that overlooks the Valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears.”

But all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen each man’s plowshare, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle;
І схо́див увесь Ізраїль до филисти́млян гострити кожен свого плуга, і за́ступа свого, і сокиру свою, і серпа́ свого,
коли тупи́лися ві́стря плугів, і заступів, і вил, і сокир, і мусіли схо́дити, щоб направити ві́стря рожна́.
So it came about, on the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.
І сталося за дні́в війни, — і не знайшлося ані меча, ані списа́ в руці всього народу, що був з Саулом та з Йоната́ном, та був зна́йдений тільки для Саула та для сина його Йоната́на.
