New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • David Anointed King

Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have [a]provided Myself a king among his sons.”
  • Samuel Anoints David as King

Now the LORD said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”
  • And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
  • But Samuel asked, “How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
“Take a heifer with you,” the LORD replied, “and say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the LORD.
  • Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”
  • Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.”
  • So Samuel did what the Lord said, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
  • So Samuel did as the LORD instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him. “What’s wrong?” they asked. “Do you come in peace?”
  • And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Sanctify[b] yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.
  • “Yes,” Samuel replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Purify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then Samuel performed the purification rite for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice, too.
  • So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!”
  • When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!”
  • But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have [c]refused him. For[d] the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
  • But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
  • So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
  • Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the LORD has chosen.”
  • Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
  • Next Jesse summoned Shimea,a but Samuel said, “Neither is this the one the LORD has chosen.”
  • Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
  • In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
  • And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not [e]sit down till he comes here.”
  • Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”
“Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
  • So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with [f]bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”
  • So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And the LORD said, “This is the one; anoint him.”
  • Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
  • So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
  • A Distressing Spirit Troubles Saul

But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.

  • David Serves in Saul’s Court

Now the Spirit of the LORD had left Saul, and the LORD sent a tormenting spiritb that filled him with depression and fear.
  • And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.
  • Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you.
  • Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the [g]distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.”
  • Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again.”
  • So Saul said to his servants, [h]“Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
  • “All right,” Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.”
  • Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
  • One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that — he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the LORD is with him.”
  • Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
  • So Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say, “Send me your son David, the shepherd.”
  • And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul.
  • Jesse responded by sending David to Saul, along with a young goat, a donkey loaded with bread, and a wineskin full of wine.
  • So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer.
  • So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer.
  • Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”
  • Then Saul sent word to Jesse asking, “Please let David remain in my service, for I am very pleased with him.”
  • And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.
  • And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.
