David Spares Saul a Second Time
Now the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is David not hiding in the hill of Hachilah, opposite Jeshimon?”
Now the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is David not hiding in the hill of Hachilah, opposite Jeshimon?”
І прийшли зіфе́яни до Саула до Ґів'ї, говорячи: „Он Давид ховається на взгір'ях Гахіли навпроти Єшімону!“
Then Saul arose and went down to the Wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the Wilderness of Ziph.
І встав Саул, і зійшов у пустиню Зіф, а з ним три тисячі чоловіка, вибраних із Ізраїля, щоб шукати Давида в пустині Зіф.
And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is opposite Jeshimon, by the road. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.
І таборував Саул на згір'ї Гахіли, що навпроти Єшімону, на дорозі. А Давид пробува́в у пустині, і побачив, що Саул вийшов за ним до пустині.
David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul had indeed come.
І послав Давид підгля́дачів, і довідався, що Саул дійсно прийшов.
So David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Now Saul lay within the camp, with the people encamped all around him.
А Давид устав, і прийшов до місця, де таборува́в Саул. І Давид побачив те місце, де лежав Саул та Авне́р, син Нерів, керівни́к його війська. А Саул лежав у табо́рі, а наро́д таборува́в навколо нього.
Then David answered, and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?”
And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
І звернувся Давид, і сказав до хітте́янина Ахімелеха та до Авішая, Церуєвого сина, Йоавого брата, говорячи: „Хто зі́йде зо мною до Саула до табо́ру?“ І сказав Авішай: „Я зійду́ з тобою!“
So David and Abishai came to the people by night; and there Saul lay sleeping within the camp, with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. And Abner and the people lay all around him.
І прийшов Давид та Авішай до Сау́лового народу вночі, аж ось Саул лежить, — спить у табо́рі, а спис його встромлений у землю в приголі́в'ї його, а Авне́р та народ лежать навколо нього.
І сказав Авіша́й до Давида: „Сьогодні Бог видав твого ворога в руку твою, а тепер проколю́ я його списом аж до землі одним ударом, і не повторю́ йому!“
But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him; for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?”
І сказав Давид до Авіша́я: „Не губи його, бо хто простягав руку свою на Господнього пома́занця, і був невинний?“
David said furthermore, “As the Lord lives, the Lord shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go out to battle and perish.
І сказав Давид: „Як живий Господь, — тільки Господь ура́зить його: або при́йде день його — і він помре, або він пі́де на війну́ і загине.
The Lord forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But please, take now the spear and the jug of water that are by his head, and let us go.”
Борони мене, Господи, простягнути свою руку на Господнього пома́занця! А тепер візьми цього списа, що в приголі́в'ї його, та горня́ води, і ходімо собі!“
So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul’s head, and they got away; and no man saw or knew it or awoke. For they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen on them.
І взяв Давид списа та горня́ води з Саулового приголів'я, та й пішли собі. І ніхто не бачив, і не знав, і не збудився, бо всі вони спали, бо на них упав сон від Господа.
Now David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of a hill afar off, a great distance being between them.
І перейшов Давид на той бік, і став зда́лека на верхови́ні гори, а між ними — велика про́сторінь.
And David called out to the people and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Do you not answer, Abner?”
Then Abner answered and said, “Who are you, calling out to the king?”
Then Abner answered and said, “Who are you, calling out to the king?”
І крикнув Давид до народу та до Авне́ра, Нерового сина, говорячи: „Чи ж не відповіси́, Авне́ре?“ А Авне́р відповів та сказав: „Хто ти, що кликав до царя?“
So David said to Abner, “Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not guarded your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king.
І сказав Давид до Авнера: „Чи ти не муж? І хто рівний тобі в Ізраїлі? І чому не пильнував ти свого пана, царя? Бо прихо́див один із народу, щоб погубити царя, твого пана.
This thing that you have done is not good. As the Lord lives, you deserve to die, because you have not guarded your master, the Lord’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the jug of water that was by his head.”
Не добра це річ, що ти зробив! Як живий Господь, — ви повинні померти, бо не пильнували ви пана свого, Господнього пома́занця! А тепер побач, де царів спис, та де горня́ води, що були в приголі́в'ї його?“
Then Saul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is that your voice, my son David?”
David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”
David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”
І пізнав Саул Давидів голос, та й сказав: „Чи це твій голос, сину мій Дави́де?“ А Давид сказав: „Мій голос, пане мій, ца́рю!“
And he said, “Why does my lord thus pursue his servant? For what have I done, or what evil is in my hand?
І далі сказав: „На́що то пан мій ганя́ється за своїм рабом? Бо що́ я зробив, і яке зло в моїй руці?
Now therefore, please, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the Lord has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out this day from sharing in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
А тепер нехай пан мій, цар, послухає слів свого раба. Якщо Господь намовив тебе проти мене, то нехай це станеться запашно́ю жертвою, а якщо лю́дські сини, — прокля́ті вони перед Господнім лицем, бо вони відігнали мене сьогодні, щоб я не належав до Господнього спа́дку, говорячи: „Іди, служи іншим богам!“
So now, do not let my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord. For the king of Israel has come out to seek a flea, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”
А тепер нехай не проллється моя кров на землю перед Господнім лицем, бо вийшов Ізраїлів цар шукати однієї блохи, як женуть куропа́тву в гора́х!“
Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David. For I will harm you no more, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Indeed I have played the fool and erred exceedingly.”
І сказав Саул: „Прогрішив я! Вернися, сину мій, Давиде, бо не вчиню́ вже тобі зла за те, що дороге́ було моє життя в оча́х твоїх цього дня. Оце був я нерозумний, і дуже багато помиля́вся“.
And David answered and said, “Here is the king’s spear. Let one of the young men come over and get it.
А Давид відповів та й сказав: „Ось царів спис, — і нехай при́йде один із слуг, і нехай його ві́зьме.
May the Lord repay every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the Lord delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed.
А Господь відпла́тить кожному за його справедливість та правду його, — що Господь дав тебе сьогодні в руку мою, та я не хотів підіймати своєї руки на Господнього пома́занця.
And indeed, as your life was valued much this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the Lord, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.”
І ось, — яке велике було життя твоє цього дня в оча́х моїх, таке велике нехай буде моє життя в оча́х Господа, і нехай Він урятує мене від усякого у́тиску!“
Then Saul said to David, “May you be blessed, my son David! You shall both do great things and also still prevail.”
So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

І сказав Саул до Давида: „Благослове́нний ти, сину мій Давиде! І ти дійсно зро́биш, і дійсно зможеш ти!“ І пішов Давид на свою доро́гу, а Саул вернувся на своє місце.
