David Allied with the Philistines

And David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will [a]despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand.”

І сказав Давид у серці своїм: „Колись я попадуся в Саулову руку. Нема мені ліпшого, як, утікаючи, утечу́ до филистимського кра́ю, — і відмовиться від мене Саул, щоб шукати мене вже по всій Ізраїлевій країні, і я втечу́ від руки його“.

Then David arose and went over with the six hundred men who were with him to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

І встав Давид, і перейшов він та шість сотень чоловіка, що з ним, до Ахіша, Маохового сина, ґатського царя.

So David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each man with his household, and David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow.

І осівся Давид з Ахі́шем у Ґаті, він та люди його, кожен із домом своїм, Давид та дві жінки його: ізреелі́тка Ахіно́ан та Авіґа́їл, коли́шня жінка Нава́лова, кармелі́тка.

And it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath; so he sought him no more.

І донесено Саулові, що Давид утік до Ґату, і він більш уже не шукав його.

Then David said to Achish, “If I have now found favor in your eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?”

А Давид сказав до Ахіша: „Якщо я знайшов милість в оча́х твоїх, нехай дадуть мені місце в одному з міст цієї землі, і нехай я осяду там. І чого сидітиме раб твій у місті твого царства ра́зом із тобою?“

So Achish gave him Ziklag that day. Therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day.

Now [b]the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was one full year and four months.

А число днів, що Давид сидів на филистимській землі, було рік та чотири місяці.

And David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the [c]Girzites, and the Amalekites. For those nations were the inhabitants of the land from [d]of old, as you go to Shur, even as far as the land of Egypt.

І схо́див Давид та люди його, і напада́ли на Ґешуреянина, і на Ґірзеянина, і на Амаликитянина, бо вони ме́шканці цього кра́ю відвіку, аж доти, як іти до Шуру, і аж до єгипетського краю.

Whenever David [e]attacked the land, he left neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the apparel, and returned and came to Achish.

І побивав Давид той край, і не лишав при житті ані чоловіка, ані жінки, і забирав худобу дрібну́ та худобу велику, і осли, і верблю́ди, і одежу, — і вертався, і прихо́див до Ахіша.

Then Achish would say, “Where have you made a raid today?” And David would say, “Against the southern area of Judah, or against the southern area of the Jerahmeelites, or against the southern area of the Kenites.”

І питався Ахіш: „На ко́го нападали ви сьогодні?“ А Давид казав: „На пі́вдень Юдин, і на пі́вдень Єрахмеелеянина, і на пі́вдень Кенеянина“.

David would save neither man nor woman alive, to bring news to Gath, saying, “Lest they should inform on us, saying, ‘Thus David did.’ ” And thus was his behavior all the time he dwelt in the country of the Philistines.

А Давид не лишав при житті ані чоловіка, ані жінки, щоб приве́сти до Ґату, говорячи: „Щоб не доне́сли на нас, кажучи: Так зробив Давид, і такий його зви́чай по всі дні, коли сидів на филистимській землі“.

So Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel utterly abhor him; therefore he will be my servant forever.”

І вірив Ахіш Давидові, говорячи: „Справді обри́днув він своєму народові в Ізраїлі, і буде мені за вічного раба!“
