New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • The Tragic End of Saul and His Sons

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
  • The Death of Saul

Now the Philistines attacked Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them. Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa.
  • Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.
  • The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they killed three of his sons — Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malkishua.
  • The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers [a]hit him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.
  • The fighting grew very fierce around Saul, and the Philistine archers caught up with him and wounded him severely.
  • Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and [b]abuse me.”
But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it.
  • Saul groaned to his armor bearer, “Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to run me through and taunt and torture me.”
But his armor bearer was afraid and would not do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
  • And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him.
  • When his armor bearer realized that Saul was dead, he fell on his own sword and died beside the king.
  • So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.
  • So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and his troops all died together that same day.
  • And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
  • When the Israelites on the other side of the Jezreel Valley and beyond the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. So the Philistines moved in and occupied their towns.
  • So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
  • The next day, when the Philistines went out to strip the dead, they found the bodies of Saul and his three sons on Mount Gilboa.
  • And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines, to proclaim it in the temple of their idols and among the people.
  • So they cut off Saul’s head and stripped off his armor. Then they proclaimed the good news of Saul’s death in their pagan temple and to the people throughout the land of Philistia.
  • Then they put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth[c] Shan.
  • They placed his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths, and they fastened his body to the wall of the city of Beth-shan.
  • Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
  • But when the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
  • all the valiant men arose and traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.
  • all their mighty warriors traveled through the night to Beth-shan and took the bodies of Saul and his sons down from the wall. They brought them to Jabesh, where they burned the bodies.
  • Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
  • Then they took their bones and buried them beneath the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days.
