  • Abram Rescues Lot

About this time war broke out in the region. King Amraphel of Babylonia,a King Arioch of Ellasar, King Kedorlaomer of Elam, and King Tidal of Goiim
  • The War of the Kings

And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel the king of Shinar, Arioch the king of El-lasar, Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and Tidal the king of nations,
  • fought against King Bera of Sodom, King Birsha of Gomorrah, King Shinab of Admah, King Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (also called Zoar).
  • [that] they made war with Bera the king of Sodom, and with Birsha the king of Gomorrah, Shinab the king of Admah, and Shemeber the king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
  • This second group of kings joined forces in Siddim Valley (that is, the valley of the Dead Seab).
  • All these were joined in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.
  • For twelve years they had been subject to King Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled against him.
  • Twelve years had they served Chedorlaomer; and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
  • One year later Kedorlaomer and his allies arrived and defeated the Rephaites at Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites at Ham, the Emites at Shaveh-kiriathaim,
  • And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-Kirjathaim,
  • and the Horites at Mount Seir, as far as El-paran at the edge of the wilderness.
  • and the Horites on their mount Seir, to El-Paran, which is by the wilderness.
  • Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (now called Kadesh) and conquered all the territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites living in Hazazon-tamar.
  • And they returned, and came to En-mishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites that dwelt at Hazazon-Tamar.
  • Then the rebel kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (also called Zoar) prepared for battle in the valley of the Dead Sea.c
  • And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went out, and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim,
  • They fought against King Kedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Babylonia, and King Arioch of Ellasar — four kings against five.
  • with Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and Tidal the king of nations, and Amraphel the king of Shinar, and Arioch the king of Ellasar -- four kings with the five.
  • As it happened, the valley of the Dead Sea was filled with tar pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into the tar pits, while the rest escaped into the mountains.
  • Lot Seized by the Four Kings

And the vale of Siddim was full of pits of asphalt. And the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there: and they that remained fled to the mountain.
  • The victorious invaders then plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and headed for home, taking with them all the spoils of war and the food supplies.
  • And they took all the property of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and departed.
  • They also captured Lot — Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom — and carried off everything he owned.
  • And they took Lot and his property, Abram's brother's son, and departed. For he dwelt in Sodom.
  • But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies.
  • Abram Rescues Lot

And one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew. And he dwelt by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner. And these were Abram's allies.
  • When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household. Then he pursued Kedorlaomer’s army until he caught up with them at Dan.
  • And Abram heard that his brother was taken captive; and he led out his trained [servants], born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued [them] as far as Dan.
  • There he divided his men and attacked during the night. Kedorlaomer’s army fled, but Abram chased them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
  • And he divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and smote them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is to the left of Damascus.
  • Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.
  • And he brought back all the property, and brought again his brother Lot and his property, and the women also, and the people.

  • Melchizedek Blesses Abram

After Abram returned from his victory over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
  • Melchizedek Blesses Abram

And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after he had returned from smiting Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, into the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's valley.
  • And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High,d brought Abram some bread and wine.
  • And Melchisedec king of Salem brought out bread and wine. And he was priest of the Most High God.
  • Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing:
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Creator of heaven and earth.
  • And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the Most High God, possessor of heavens and earth.
  • And blessed be God Most High,
who has defeated your enemies for you.”
Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.
  • And blessed be the Most High God, who has delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him the tenth of all.
  • The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.”
  • And the king of Sodom said to Abram, Give me the souls, and take the property for thyself.
  • Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
  • And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand to Jehovah, the Most High God, possessor of heavens and earth,
  • that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’
  • if from a thread even to a sandal-thong, yes, if of all that is thine, I take [anything] ...; that thou mayest not say, I have made Abram rich;
  • I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies — Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.”
  • save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men that went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them take their portion.
