  • that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).
  • This second group of kings joined forces in Siddim Valley (that is, the valley of the Dead Seab).
  • All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).
  • For twelve years they had been subject to King Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled against him.
  • Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
  • One year later Kedorlaomer and his allies arrived and defeated the Rephaites at Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzites at Ham, the Emites at Shaveh-kiriathaim,
  • In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
  • and the Horites at Mount Seir, as far as El-paran at the edge of the wilderness.
  • and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness.
  • Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (now called Kadesh) and conquered all the territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites living in Hazazon-tamar.
  • Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezon Tamar.

  • And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim
  • They fought against King Kedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Babylonia, and King Arioch of Ellasar — four kings against five.
  • against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of [b]nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar — four kings against five.
  • As it happened, the valley of the Dead Sea was filled with tar pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into the tar pits, while the rest escaped into the mountains.
  • Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains.
  • The victorious invaders then plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and headed for home, taking with them all the spoils of war and the food supplies.
  • Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.
  • They also captured Lot — Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom — and carried off everything he owned.
  • They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
  • But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies.
  • Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by [c]the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram.
  • When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household. Then he pursued Kedorlaomer’s army until he caught up with them at Dan.
  • Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.
  • There he divided his men and attacked during the night. Kedorlaomer’s army fled, but Abram chased them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
  • He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is [d]north of Damascus.
  • Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.
  • So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

  • Melchizedek Blesses Abram

After Abram returned from his victory over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
  • And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley), after his return from the [e]defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.
  • And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High,d brought Abram some bread and wine.
  • Abram and Melchizedek

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.
  • Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing:
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Creator of heaven and earth.
  • And he blessed him and said:
“Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
    Possessor of heaven and earth;
  • And blessed be God Most High,
who has defeated your enemies for you.”
Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.
  • And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”
And he gave him [f]a tithe of all.
  • The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.”
  • Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the [g]persons, and take the goods for yourself.”
  • Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
  • But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
  • that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’
  • that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’ —
  • I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies — Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.”
  • except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”
