The LORD’s Covenant Promise to Abram

Some time later, the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”

А після того, про що йшла мова, було до Аврама у видінні Господнє слово, що промовляло: Не бійся, Авраме, Я обороняю тебе. Твоя винагорода буде дуже велика.

But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth.

Відказує Аврам: Владико, що мені даси? Адже я відходжу бездітним. А син Масека, який народився в моєму домі, він — із Дамаска, Елієзер.

3

You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.”

3

Оскільки Ти не дав мені нащадків, — сказав Аврам, — то той, хто народився в моєму домі, — після мене стане спадкоємцем.

Then the LORD said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.”

І тут же був до нього Божий голос, що промовляв: Не цей успадкує по тобі, а той, хто вийде з твого лона, — він стане твоїм спадкоємцем.

Then the LORD took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”

І вивів його надвір, і сказав йому: Поглянь на небо й порахуй зірки, — якщо зможеш їх порахувати. І продовжив: Таким буде твоє потомство.

And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.

І повірив Аврам Богові — і це зараховано йому за праведність.

Then the LORD told him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession.”

Господь сказав йому: Я — Бог, Який вивів тебе з країни халдейців, щоб дати тобі цю землю в спадщину.

8

But Abram replied, “O Sovereign LORD, how can I be sure that I will actually possess it?”

Той же сказав: Владико Господи, як довідаюся, що успадкую її?

The LORD told him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

А Господь сказав йому: Візьми Мені трилітню ялівку, трилітню козу, трилітнього барана, горлицю і голуба.

10

So Abram presented all these to him and killed them. Then he cut each animal down the middle and laid the halves side by side; he did not, however, cut the birds in half.

Узяв він усе це для Нього, розсік навпіл і поклав кожну частину напроти іншої її половини, а птахів не порозсікав.

11

Some vultures swooped down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away.

На ті розсічені частини позліталися птахи, тож Аврам сів біля них.

As the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a terrifying darkness came down over him.

При заході сонця на Аврама напав глибокий сон; і ось, на нього находить темний великий страх.

13

Then the LORD said to Abram, “You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.

13

І було сказано Аврамові: Тож неодмінно знай [1] , що твої нащадки будуть чужинцями — житимуть не на власній землі; їх зроблять рабами, заподіють їм зло і гнобитимуть їх чотириста років.

14

But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and in the end they will come away with great wealth.

14

Та над народом, якому будуть рабами, Я здійсню суд. І після того вони прийдуть сюди з великим майном.

15

(As for you, you will die in peace and be buried at a ripe old age.)

15

Ти ж відійдеш до своїх предків з миром, — будеш похований у глибокій старості.

16

After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction.”

16

А четверте покоління повернеться сюди, бо сьогодні ще не наповнилася міра беззаконня аморейців.

17

After the sun went down and darkness fell, Abram saw a smoking firepot and a flaming torch pass between the halves of the carcasses.

Коли заходило сонце, з’явилося полум’я; і ось: піч, що диміла, і вогненні спалахи пройшли між тими розсіченими частинами.

18

So the LORD made a covenant with Abram that day and said, “I have given this land to your descendants, all the way from the border of Egypta to the great Euphrates River —

У той день Господь уклав з Аврамом завіт, промовляючи: Твоїм нащадкам дам оцю землю: від Єгипетської ріки — до великої ріки, ріки Євфрат; —

19

the land now occupied by the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,

кенейців, кенезейців, кедмонейців,

20

Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,

20

хетів, ферезейців, рафаїнців,

21

Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”

21

аморейців, ханаанців, евейців, ґерґесейців і євусейців.
