Darby Bible Translation

  • Abram Is Named Abraham

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai — ‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.
  • Abram Named Abraham

And Abram was ninety-nine years old, when Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said to him, I [am] the Almighty God: walk before my face, and be perfect.
  • I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.”
  • And I will set my covenant between me and thee, and will very greatly multiply thee.
  • At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him,
  • And Abram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying,
  • “This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations!
  • It is I: behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of a multitude of nations.
  • What’s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham,a for you will be the father of many nations.
  • And thy name shall no more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of a multitude of nations have I made thee.
  • I will make you extremely fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!
  • And I will make thee exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
  • “I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendantsb after you, from generation to generation. This is the everlasting covenant: I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
  • And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee.
  • And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.”
  • And I give to thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojourning, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be a God to them.

  • The Mark of the Covenant

Then God said to Abraham, “Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.
  • The Covenant of Circumcision

And God said to Abraham, And [as for] thee, thou shalt keep my covenant, thou and thy seed after thee in their generations.
  • This is the covenant that you and your descendants must keep: Each male among you must be circumcised.
  • This is my covenant which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee -- that every male among you be circumcised.
  • You must cut off the flesh of your foreskin as a sign of the covenant between me and you.
  • And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and [that] shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
  • From generation to generation, every male child must be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth. This applies not only to members of your family but also to the servants born in your household and the foreign-born servants whom you have purchased.
  • And at eight days old shall every male in your generations be circumcised among you -- he who is born in the house, and he who is bought with money, any stranger who is not of thy seed.
  • All must be circumcised. Your bodies will bear the mark of my everlasting covenant.
  • He who is born in thy house, and he who is bought with thy money, must be circumcised; and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
  • Any male who fails to be circumcised will be cut off from the covenant family for breaking the covenant.”
  • And the uncircumcised male who hath not been circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his peoples: he hath broken my covenant.

  • Sarai Is Named Sarah

Then God said to Abraham, “Regarding Sarai, your wife — her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah.c
  • And God said to Abraham, [As to] Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
  • And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.”
  • And I will bless her, and I will give thee a son also of her; and I will bless her, and she shall become nations: kings of peoples shall be of her.
  • Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?”
  • And Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall [a child] be born to him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear?
  • So Abraham said to God, “May Ishmael live under your special blessing!”
  • And Abraham said to God, Oh that Ishmael might live before thee!
  • But God replied, “No — Sarah, your wife, will give birth to a son for you. You will name him Isaac,d and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant.
  • And God said, Sarah thy wife shall indeed bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him, for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.
  • As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
  • And for Ishmael I have heard thee: behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful, and will very greatly multiply him; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
  • But my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac, who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year.”
  • But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to thee at this appointed time in the next year.
  • When God had finished speaking, he left Abraham.
  • And he left off talking with him; and God went up from Abraham.
  • On that very day Abraham took his son, Ishmael, and every male in his household, including those born there and those he had bought. Then he circumcised them, cutting off their foreskins, just as God had told him.
  • And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his money -- every male among the people of Abraham's house -- and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on that same day, as God had said to him.
  • Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised,
  • And Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
  • and Ishmael, his son, was thirteen.
  • And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
  • Both Abraham and his son, Ishmael, were circumcised on that same day,
  • In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son;
  • along with all the other men and boys of the household, whether they were born there or bought as servants. All were circumcised with him.
  • and all the men of his house, born in his house, or bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
