A Son Is Promised to Sarah

The LORD appeared again to Abraham near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. One day Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day.

І з’явився Авраамові Бог біля мамврійського дуба, коли він сидів опівдні при вході до свого намету.

He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground.

Підвівши свої очі, він побачив: ось три Мужі стояли перед ним. І побачивши це, побіг їм назустріч від входу свого намету, і вклонився до землі,

“My lord,” he said, “if it pleases you, stop here for a while.

3

та сказав: Господи, якщо я знайшов милість перед Тобою, не обмини Твого раба.

4

Rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet.

4

Хай принесуть води і хай помиють ваші ноги, і освіжіться під деревом.

5

And since you’ve honored your servant with this visit, let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.”
“All right,” they said. “Do as you have said.”

Я ж принесу хліба, і їстимете, а після цього підете своєю дорогою, задля якої ви звернули до вашого раба. А вони сказали: Зроби так, як сказав.

So Abraham ran back to the tent and said to Sarah, “Hurry! Get three large measuresa of your best flour, knead it into dough, and bake some bread.”

І Авраам поспішив у намет до Сарри, і сказав їй: Швиденько заміси три мірки питльованого борошна і зроби паляниці.

Then Abraham ran out to the herd and chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it.

І побіг Авраам до худоби, взяв молоде, гарне теля, і дав рабові, а той швидко приготував його.

When the food was ready, Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the men. As they ate, Abraham waited on them in the shade of the trees.

Взяв масло, молоко і теля, яке приготував, і поклав перед ними, і вони попоїли. А сам стояв біля них під деревом.

“Where is Sarah, your wife?” the visitors asked.
“She’s inside the tent,” Abraham replied.

Один із них промовив до нього: Де твоя дружина Сарра? Він же у відповідь сказав: Ось, у наметі.

Then one of them said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!”
Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent.

Повертаючись, — сказав він, — зайду до тебе в той же час і годину, і твоя дружина Сарра матиме сина. А Сарра, яка була при вході намету, почула, бо стояла за ним.

Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children.

Авраам і Сарра були старі, похилого віку, і те, що звичайно буває в жінок, у Сарри припинилося.

12

So she laughed silently to herself and said, “How could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my master — my husband — is also so old?”

Тож Сарра засміялася про себе, говорячи: Адже це ще не сталося в мене дотепер, та й пан мій вже старий!

13

Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’

І промовив Господь до Авраама: Чому ж це, глузуючи, Сарра сказала про себе: Невже я справді народжу? Адже я стара.

14

Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

14

Хіба сказане є неможливе для Бога? У такий же час і годину повернуся до тебе, і буде в Сарри син.

15

Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.”
But the LORD said, “No, you did laugh.”

Сарра перелякалася й заперечила, кажучи: Я не засміялася. А Той сказав: Ні, ти таки засміялася.

16

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

Then the men got up from their meal and looked out toward Sodom. As they left, Abraham went with them to send them on their way.

16

Мужі підвелися звідти й подивилися в напрямку Содома й Гоморри; Авраам же, супроводжуючи Їх, ішов разом з Ними.

17

“Should I hide my plan from Abraham?” the LORD asked.

17

І сказав Господь: Чи приховуватиму Я від Авраама, Свого раба, те, що роблю?

18

“For Abraham will certainly become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.

18

Адже Авраам неодмінно стане [1] великим і численним народом, і будуть благословенні в ньому всі народи землі.

19

I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. Then I will do for Abraham all that I have promised.”

19

Бо знаю, що заповість своїм синам і своєму домові після себе, і вони будуть дотримуватися Господніх доріг, аби чинити справедливість і суд. Щоби здійснив Господь для Авраама все, що йому сказав.

20

So the LORD told Abraham, “I have heard a great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin is so flagrant.

20

Крик Содома й Гоморри посилився, — сказав Господь, — і їхні гріхи дуже великі.

21

I am going down to see if their actions are as wicked as I have heard. If not, I want to know.”

21

Тому, зійшовши, погляну, чи все відбувається так, як доносить їхній крик, котрий лине до Мене; якщо ж ні, то щоб Я знав.

22

The other men turned and headed toward Sodom, but the LORD remained with Abraham.

22

І повернувшись, Мужі пішли звідти в Содом; Авраам же продовжував стояти перед Господом.

23

Abraham approached him and said, “Will you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked?

23

Наблизившись, Авраам сказав: Невже знищиш разом праведного з неправедним, невже й праведний буде, як неправедний?

24

Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the city — will you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes?

24

Якщо буде п’ятдесят праведних у місті, чи знищиш їх? Чи не пощадиш усю місцевість задля п’ятдесяти праведних, якщо будуть у ньому?

25

Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”

У жодному разі Ти не вчиниш за цим словом, аби знищити праведного з неправедними. Хіба буде з праведним — як з неправедним? Зовсім ні! Ти ж Суддя всієї землі! Невже не вчиниш суду?

26

And the LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.”

26

Та Господь промовив: Якщо знайду в місті Содомі п’ятдесят праведних, то збережу всю місцевість задля них.

27

Then Abraham spoke again. “Since I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.

27

У відповідь Авраам сказав: Тепер я, будучи землею і попелом, почав говорити до Господа, —

28

Suppose there are only forty-five righteous people rather than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?”
And the LORD said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five righteous people there.”

28

та якщо кількість праведних зменшиться з п’ятдесяти на п’ять осіб, — чи знищиш через п’ятьох усе місто? Той сказав: Не знищу, коли там знайду сорок п’ять.

29

Then Abraham pressed his request further. “Suppose there are only forty?”
And the LORD replied, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.”

Авраам продовжував промовляти до Нього і сказав: А якщо знайдуться там сорок? Той відповів: Не знищу задля сорока.

30

“Please don’t be angry, my Lord,” Abraham pleaded. “Let me speak — suppose only thirty righteous people are found?”
And the LORD replied, “I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”

Що, Господи, коли говоритиму ще? — продовжив він. — А якщо знайдуться там тридцять? Той сказав: Не знищу, якщо знайду там тридцять.

31

Then Abraham said, “Since I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continue — suppose there are only twenty?”
And the LORD replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”

Оскільки, — сказав, — я наважився говорити до Господа, — якщо ж знайдеться там двадцять? Той сказав: Не знищу і задля двадцяти.

32

Finally, Abraham said, “Lord, please don’t be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?”
And the LORD replied, “Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”

Тоді він сказав: Що, Господи, коли промовлю ще один раз? А якщо знайдеться там десять? Той сказав: Не знищу і задля десяти.

33

When the LORD had finished his conversation with Abraham, he went on his way, and Abraham returned to his tent.

33

Коли Господь закінчив говорити з Авраамом, то відійшов. Авраам же повернувся на своє місце.
