  • So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed.
  • The Garden of Eden

    Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
  • On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he resteda from all his work.
  • And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
  • And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.
  • Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
  • This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth.
    The Man and Woman in Eden

    When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
  • This is the [a]history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
  • neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the LORD God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil.
  • before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;
  • Instead, springsb came up from the ground and watered all the land.
  • but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
  • Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.
  • And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
  • Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made.
  • Life in God’s Garden

    The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
  • The LORD God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground — trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  • And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  • A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches.
  • Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.
  • The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found.
  • The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
  • The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there.
  • And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.
  • The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush.
  • The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.
  • The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates.
  • The name of the third river is Hiddekel;[b] it is the one which goes toward the east of [c]Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
  • The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.
  • Then the Lord God took [d]the man and put him in the garden of Eden to [e]tend and keep it.
  • But the LORD God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden —
  • And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
  • except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”
  • but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you[f] shall surely die.”
  • Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”
  • And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
  • So the LORD God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the manc to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one.
  • Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to [g]Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
  • He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.
  • So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
  • So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out one of the man’s ribsd and closed up the opening.
  • And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
  • Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.
  • Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He [h]made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
  • “At last!” the man exclaimed.
    “This one is bone from my bone,
    and flesh from my flesh!
    She will be called ‘woman,’
    because she was taken from ‘man.’”
  • And Adam said:
    “This is now bone of my bones
    And flesh of my flesh;
    She shall be called [i]Woman,
    Because she was taken out of [j]Man.”
  • This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
  • Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be[k] joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
  • Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.
  • And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
