New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • Cain and Abel

Now Adama had sexual relations with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When she gave birth to Cain, she said, “With the LORD’s help, I have producedb a man!”
  • Cain Murders Abel

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore [a]Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.”
  • Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel.
When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground.
  • Then she bore again, this time his brother [b]Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
  • When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD.
  • And [c]in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.
  • Abel also brought a gift — the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift,
  • Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,
  • but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.
  • but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
  • “Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected?
  • So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
  • You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
  • If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is [d]for you, but you should rule over it.”
  • One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.”c And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him.
  • Now Cain [e]talked with Abel his [f]brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
  • Afterward the LORD asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?”
“I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?”
  • Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
  • But the LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!
  • And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
  • Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood.
  • So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
  • No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.”
  • When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
  • Cain replied to the LORD, “My punishmentd is too great for me to bear!
  • And Cain said to the Lord, “My [g]punishment is greater than I can bear!
  • You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!”
  • Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”
  • The LORD replied, “No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him.
  • And the Lord said to him, [h]“Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.
  • So Cain left the LORD’s presence and settled in the land of Nod,e east of Eden.
  • The Family of Cain

Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of [i]Nod on the east of Eden.

  • The Descendants of Cain

Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain founded a city, which he named Enoch, after his son.
  • And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son — Enoch.
  • Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad became the father off Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
  • To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.
  • Lamech married two women. The first was named Adah, and the second was Zillah.
  • Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.
  • Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the first of those who raise livestock and live in tents.
  • And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
  • His brother’s name was Jubal, the first of all who play the harp and flute.
  • His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and [j]flute.
  • Lamech’s other wife, Zillah, gave birth to a son named Tubal-cain. He became an expert in forging tools of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain had a sister named Naamah.
  • And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
  • One day Lamech said to his wives,
    “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
listen to me, you wives of Lamech.
I have killed a man who attacked me,
a young man who wounded me.
  • Then Lamech said to his wives:
    “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech!
For I have [k]killed a man for wounding me,
Even a young man [l]for hurting me.
  • If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times,
then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!”
  • If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,
    Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”

  • The Birth of Seth

Adam had sexual relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to another son. She named him Seth,g for she said, “God has granted me another son in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”
  • A New Son

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him [m]Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.”
  • When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. At that time people first began to worship the LORD by name.
  • And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him [n]Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.
