Joseph’s Silver Cup
When his brothers were ready to leave, Joseph gave these instructions to his palace manager: “Fill each of their sacks with as much grain as they can carry, and put each man’s money back into his sack.
When his brothers were ready to leave, Joseph gave these instructions to his palace manager: “Fill each of their sacks with as much grain as they can carry, and put each man’s money back into his sack.
Benjamin and the Silver Cup
And he commanded him who was over his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry; and put every man's money in the mouth of his sack.
And he commanded him who was over his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry; and put every man's money in the mouth of his sack.
Then put my personal silver cup at the top of the youngest brother’s sack, along with the money for his grain.” So the manager did as Joseph instructed him.
And put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his grain-money. And he did according to the word of Joseph which he had spoken.
The brothers were up at dawn and were sent on their journey with their loaded donkeys.
In the morning, when it was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.
But when they had gone only a short distance and were barely out of the city, Joseph said to his palace manager, “Chase after them and stop them. When you catch up with them, ask them, ‘Why have you repaid my kindness with such evil?
They were gone out of the city, [and] not [yet] far off, when Joseph said to him who was over his house, Up! follow after the men; and when thou overtakest them, thou shalt say to them, Why have ye rewarded evil for good?
Is not this [it] in which my lord drinks, and in which indeed he divines? Ye have done evil [in] what ye have done.
When the palace manager caught up with the men, he spoke to them as he had been instructed.
And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these words.
“What are you talking about?” the brothers responded. “We are your servants and would never do such a thing!
And they said to him, Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from thy servants to do such a thing!
Didn’t we return the money we found in our sacks? We brought it back all the way from the land of Canaan. Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
Behold, the money that we found in our sacks' mouths we have brought again to thee from the land of Canaan; and how should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?
If you find his cup with any one of us, let that man die. And all the rest of us, my lord, will be your slaves.”
With whomsoever of thy servants it is found, let him die; and we also will be my lord's bondmen.
“That’s fair,” the man replied. “But only the one who stole the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may go free.”
And he said, Now also [let] it [be] according to your words: let him with whom it is found be my bondman, but ye shall be blameless.
They all quickly took their sacks from the backs of their donkeys and opened them.
And they hasted and laid down every man his sack on the ground, and opened every man his sack.
The palace manager searched the brothers’ sacks, from the oldest to the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack!
And he searched carefully: he began at the eldest, and ended at the youngest; and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
When the brothers saw this, they tore their clothing in despair. Then they loaded their donkeys again and returned to the city.
Then they rent their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and they returned to the city.
Joseph was still in his palace when Judah and his brothers arrived, and they fell to the ground before him.
And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; and he was still there; and they fell down before him to the ground.
“What have you done?” Joseph demanded. “Don’t you know that a man like me can predict the future?”
And Joseph said to them, What deed is this which ye have done? Did ye not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?
Judah answered, “Oh, my lord, what can we say to you? How can we explain this? How can we prove our innocence? God is punishing us for our sins. My lord, we have all returned to be your slaves — all of us, not just our brother who had your cup in his sack.”
And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? what shall we speak, and how justify ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of thy servants; behold, we are my lord's bondmen, both we, and he in whose hand the cup has been found.
“No,” Joseph said. “I would never do such a thing! Only the man who stole the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may go back to your father in peace.”
And he said, Far be it from me to do so! The man in whose hand the cup has been found, he shall be my bondman; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.
Judah Speaks for His Brothers
Then Judah stepped forward and said, “Please, my lord, let your servant say just one word to you. Please, do not be angry with me, even though you are as powerful as Pharaoh himself.
Judah Pleads for Benjamin
Then Judah came near to him, and said, Ah! my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant; for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah came near to him, and said, Ah! my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant; for thou art even as Pharaoh.
“My lord, previously you asked us, your servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?
And we responded, ‘Yes, my lord, we have a father who is an old man, and his youngest son is a child of his old age. His full brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him very much.’
And we said to my lord, We have an aged father, and a child born to him in his old age, [yet] young; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loves him.
“And you said to us, ‘Bring him here so I can see him with my own eyes.’
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set mine eye on him.
But we said to you, ‘My lord, the boy cannot leave his father, for his father would die.’
And we said to my lord, The youth cannot leave his father: if he should leave his father, [his father] would die.
But you told us, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes with you, you will never see my face again.’
And thou saidst to thy servants, Unless your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
“So we returned to your servant, our father, and told him what you had said.
And it came to pass when we came up to thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
Later, when he said, ‘Go back again and buy us more food,’
And our father said, Go again, buy us a little food.
we replied, ‘We can’t go unless you let our youngest brother go with us. We’ll never get to see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’
But we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.
“Then my father said to us, ‘As you know, my wife had two sons,
And thy servant my father said to us, Ye know that my wife bore me two [sons];
and one of them went away and never returned. Doubtless he was torn to pieces by some wild animal. I have never seen him since.
and the one went out from me, and I said, He must certainly have been torn in pieces; and I have not seen him [again] hitherto.
And if ye take this one also from me, and mischief should befall him, ye will bring down my grey hairs with misery to Sheol.
“And now, my lord, I cannot go back to my father without the boy. Our father’s life is bound up in the boy’s life.
And now, when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad is not with us, -- seeing that his life is bound up with his life,
If he sees that the boy is not with us, our father will die. We, your servants, will indeed be responsible for sending that grieving, white-haired man to his grave.
it will come to pass when he sees that the lad is not [there], that he will die; and thy servants will bring down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.
My lord, I guaranteed to my father that I would take care of the boy. I told him, ‘If I don’t bring him back to you, I will bear the blame forever.’
For thy servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, If I bring him not to thee, then I shall be guilty toward my father all my days.
“So please, my lord, let me stay here as a slave instead of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.
And now, let thy servant stay, I pray thee, instead of the lad a bondman to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brethren;
