New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • A World Gone Wrong

Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them.
  • The Corruption of Mankind

Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,
  • The sons of God saw the beautiful womena and took any they wanted as their wives.
  • that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.
  • Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up withb humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”
  • Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
  • In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times.
  • The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
  • The LORD observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.
  • Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
  • So the LORD was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.
  • The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
  • And the LORD said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing — all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.”
  • The LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”
  • But Noah found favor with the LORD.
  • But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

  • The Story of Noah

This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
  • These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.
  • Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
  • Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
  • Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.
  • Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.
  • God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.
  • God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.
  • So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!
  • Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.
  • “Build a large boatc from cypress woodd and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.
  • “Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with rooms, and shall cover it inside and out with pitch.
  • Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.e
  • “This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
  • Leave an 18-inch openingf below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat — lower, middle, and upper.
  • “You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.
  • “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.
  • “Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
  • But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat — you and your wife and your sons and their wives.
  • “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark — you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
  • Bring a pair of every kind of animal — a male and a female — into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood.
  • “And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
  • Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive.
  • “Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.
  • And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.”
  • “As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.”
  • So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.
  • Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.
