Josiah’s Religious Reforms

А цар послав, і зібрали до нього всіх старши́х Юди та Єрусалиму.
And the king went up to the Temple of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, along with the priests and the prophets — all the people from the least to the greatest. There the king read to them the entire Book of the Covenant that had been found in the LORD’s Temple.
І ввійшов до Господнього дому цар та кожен муж Юди, а з ним усі мешканці Єрусалиму, і священики, і пророки, і ввесь народ від мало́го й аж до великого, і він прочитав до їхніх ушей усі слова́ Книги Заповіту, зна́йденої в Господньому домі.
The king took his place of authority beside the pillar and renewed the covenant in the LORD’s presence. He pledged to obey the LORD by keeping all his commands, laws, and decrees with all his heart and soul. In this way, he confirmed all the terms of the covenant that were written in the scroll, and all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.
І став цар на підвищенні, і склав заповіта перед Господнім лицем, щоб ходити за Господом та доде́ржувати заповіді Його, і сві́дчення Його, і постанови Його всім серцем та всією душею, щоб виконати слова́ того заповіту, що написані в тій книзі. І ввесь народ пристав до заповіту.
Then the king instructed Hilkiah the high priest and the priests of the second rank and the Temple gatekeepers to remove from the LORD’s Temple all the articles that were used to worship Baal, Asherah, and all the powers of the heavens. The king had all these things burned outside Jerusalem on the terraces of the Kidron Valley, and he carried the ashes away to Bethel.
І наказав цар Хілкійї, великому священикові, й іншим священикам та сторожа́м поро́га, щоб повино́сили з Господнього храму всі речі, зро́блені для Ваала та для Аста́рти, та для всіх небесних світил. І він попали́в їх поза Єрусалимом на кедро́нських поля́х, а їхній по́рох відніс до Бет-Елу.
He did away with the idolatrous priests, who had been appointed by the previous kings of Judah, for they had offered sacrifices at the pagan shrines throughout Judah and even in the vicinity of Jerusalem. They had also offered sacrifices to Baal, and to the sun, the moon, the constellations, and to all the powers of the heavens.
І він поскидав жерці́в, що їх понаставля́ли були Юдині царі, і що вони кадили на па́гірках по Юдиних містах та в око́лицях Єрусалиму, і кадили для Ваала, і для сонця, і для місяця, і для планет, і для всіх небесних світил.
The king removed the Asherah pole from the LORD’s Temple and took it outside Jerusalem to the Kidron Valley, where he burned it. Then he ground the ashes of the pole to dust and threw the dust over the graves of the people.
І він виніс Астарту з Господнього дому поза Єрусалим до кедро́нської долини, та й спалив її в кедро́нській долині, і стер на по́рох, а її по́рох кинув на гроби́ звичайних людей.
He also tore down the living quarters of the male and female shrine prostitutes that were inside the Temple of the LORD, where the women wove coverings for the Asherah pole.
І він порозбива́в доми культу блудодійників, що були при Господньому домі, де жінки́ ткали завісу для Аста́рти.
Josiah brought to Jerusalem all the priests who were living in other towns of Judah. He also defiled the pagan shrines, where they had offered sacrifices — all the way from Geba to Beersheba. He destroyed the shrines at the entrance to the gate of Joshua, the governor of Jerusalem. This gate was located to the left of the city gate as one enters the city.
І він ви́провадив усіх священиків з Юдиних міст, і опога́нив па́гірки, де священики кадили, від Ґеви аж до Беер-Шеви, і порозбивав па́гірки брам, що були при вході брами Ісуса, зверхника міста, що ліво́руч тому́, хто вхо́див до брами міста.
Але священики па́гірків не вхо́дили до Господнього же́ртівника в Єрусалимі, а тільки їли прісне́ серед своїх братів.
І він опога́нив місце ста́влення на огні, що в долині Гінномового сина, щоб ніхто не перево́див через огонь сина свого та дочку́ свою для Молоха.
І він повідставляв коні, яких давали Юдині царі для сонця, від входу до Господнього дому, при кімна́ті є́внуха Нетан-Мелеха, що був у Парварімі, а колесни́ці сонця попали́в ув огні.
А же́ртівники, що були на даху́ Ахазової го́рниці, що пороби́ли Юдині царі, та жертівники, що пороби́в Манасія на двох подві́р'ях Господнього дому, цар порозбива́в. І він звідти побіг, і кинув їхній по́рох до кедро́нського пото́ку.
The king also desecrated the pagan shrines east of Jerusalem, to the south of the Mount of Corruption, where King Solomon of Israel had built shrines for Ashtoreth, the detestable goddess of the Sidonians; and for Chemosh, the detestable god of the Moabites; and for Molech,e the vile god of the Ammonites.
А па́гірки, що навпроти Єрусалиму, право́руч гори Згуби, які побудува́в був Соломон, Ізраїлів цар, для Астарти, гидо́ти сидо́нської, і для Кемота, гидо́ти моавської, і для Мілкома, гидо́ти Аммонових синів, цар поопога́нював.
He smashed the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah poles. Then he desecrated these places by scattering human bones over them.
І він порозбивав стовпи для богів, і постинав посвя́чені дере́ва, а їхнє місце напо́внив лю́дськими кістка́ми.
The king also tore down the altar at Bethel — the pagan shrine that Jeroboam son of Nebat had made when he caused Israel to sin. He burned down the shrine and ground it to dust, and he burned the Asherah pole.
А також жертівника, що в Бет-Елі, па́гірка, що зробив був Єровоам, син Неватів, що ввів у гріх Ізраїля, також же́ртівника цього та цього па́гірка він розбив, і спалив того па́гірка та стер на по́рох, і Аста́рту спалив.
Then Josiah turned around and noticed several tombs in the side of the hill. He ordered that the bones be brought out, and he burned them on the altar at Bethel to desecrate it. (This happened just as the LORD had promised through the man of God when Jeroboam stood beside the altar at the festival.)

І оберну́вся Йосі́я, та й побачив гроби́, що були там на горі. І послав він, і позабирав кості з гробі́в, і попали́в на жертівнику, — і опога́нив його, за словом Господнім, яке кли́кав був Божий чоловік, що проріка́в оці речі.
“What is that monument over there?” Josiah asked.
And the people of the town told him, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and predicted the very things that you have just done to the altar at Bethel!”

І сказав цар: „Що́ це за надгро́бок, що я бачу?“ А люди того міста сказали йому: „Це надгро́бок Божого чоловіка, що прийшов з Юдеї й прорік оці речі, які зробив ти на же́ртівнику в Бет-Елі“.
Josiah replied, “Leave it alone. Don’t disturb his bones.” So they did not burn his bones or those of the old prophet from Samaria.
А він сказав: „Дайте йому спо́кій, — нехай ніхто не рухає косте́й його“. І зберегли його кості, кості того пророка, що прийшов був із Самарії.
А також усі доми́ па́гірків, що по самарійських містах, що поробили були Ізраїлеві царі, щоб гніви́ти Господа, Йосія понищив, і зробив з ними те саме, що зробив у Бет-Елі.
He executed the priests of the pagan shrines on their own altars, and he burned human bones on the altars to desecrate them. Finally, he returned to Jerusalem.
І порізав він усіх священиків па́гірків, що були там, на жертівниках, і попалив на них лю́дські кості, та й вернувся до Єрусалиму.
Josiah Celebrates Passover
King Josiah then issued this order to all the people: “You must celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God, as required in this Book of the Covenant.”
І наказав цар усьому наро́дові, говорячи: „Справте Пасху для Господа, вашого Бога, як написано в оцій Книзі Заповіту“.
There had not been a Passover celebration like that since the time when the judges ruled in Israel, nor throughout all the years of the kings of Israel and Judah.
Бо не справля́лася ця Пасха від днів суддів, що судили Ізраїля, по всі дні царів Ізраїлевих та царів Юдиних.
But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah’s reign, this Passover was celebrated to the LORD in Jerusalem.
І тільки вісімнадцятого року царя Йосії справлялася Пасха для Господа в Єрусалимі.
А також викликачів духів померлих, і духів віщих, і домови́х божків, і бовва́нів, і всякі гидо́ти, що появилися в Юдинім кра́ї та в Єрусалимі, повини́щував Йосія, щоб поставити слова Зако́ну, написані в книзі, що знайшов священик Хілкійя в Господньому домі.
Never before had there been a king like Josiah, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and soul and strength, obeying all the laws of Moses. And there has never been a king like him since.
А такого царя, як він, не було перед ним, що наверну́вся б до Господа всім своїм серцем, і всією душею своєю, і всією силою своєю, за всім Мойсеєвим Зако́ном, і по ньому не повставав такий, як він.
Even so, the LORD was very angry with Judah because of all the wicked things Manasseh had done to provoke him.
Тільки не спинився Господь від ре́вности Свого великого гніву, яким запалився Його гнів на Юду за всі огі́рчення, якими гніви́в Його Манасія.
For the LORD said, “I will also banish Judah from my presence just as I have banished Israel. And I will reject my chosen city of Jerusalem and the Temple where my name was to be honored.”
І сказав Господь: „Також Юду відкину Я від лиця Свого, як відкинув Я Ізраїля, і відкину це місто, яке вибрав, Єрусалим, та цей храм, про який Я сказав: Ім'я́ Моє буде там!“

А решта діл Йосії та все, що́ він робив, — ото вони написані в Книзі Хроніки Юдиних царів.
За його днів пішов фараон Нехо́, єгипетський цар, на асирійського царя, на річку Єфра́т. І вийшов цар Йосія навпроти нього, та той убив його в Меґіддо, коли він побачив його...
Josiah’s officers took his body back in a chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. Then the people of the land anointed Josiah’s son Jehoahaz and made him the next king.
І його раби пове́зли його мертвого з Меґіддо, і приве́зли його до Єрусалиму, і поховали його в гробівці́ його́. А народ кра́ю взяв Єгоахаза, сина Йосії, і пома́зали його, та й настанови́ли його царем замість його батька.
Jehoahaz Rules in Judah
Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah.
Єгоахаз був віку двадцяти й трьох літ, коли він зацарював, і царював в Єрусалимі три місяці. А ім'я́ його матері — Хамуталь, дочка́ Єремі́ї, з Лівни.
He did what was evil in the LORD’s sight, just as his ancestors had done.
І робив він зло в Господніх оча́х, усе так, як робили його батьки.
І фараон Нехо́ зв'язав його в Рівлі, в гаматському кра́ї, щоб він не царював в Єрусалимі, і наклав ка́ру на цей край, — сто талантів срібла та талант золота.
Jehoiakim Rules in Judah
Pharaoh Neco then installed Eliakim, another of Josiah’s sons, to reign in place of his father, and he changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. Jehoahaz was taken to Egypt as a prisoner, where he died.
А царем настанови́в фараон Нехо Ел'якима, сина Йосії, замість батька його Йосії, і змінив ім'я́ його на Єгояким. А Єгоахаза він узяв, і той прибув до Єгипту та й помер там.
In order to get the silver and gold demanded as tribute by Pharaoh Neco, Jehoiakim collected a tax from the people of Judah, requiring them to pay in proportion to their wealth.
І Єгояким давав фараонові срібла та золота; тільки розклав це на край, щоб давати те срібло на фараонів наказ, — він стягав те срібло та золото з наро́ду кра́ю за оцінкою землі кожного, щоб віддати фараонові Нехо.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother was Zebidah, the daughter of Pedaiah from Rumah.
Єгояки́м був віку двадцяти й п'яти літ, коли він зацарював, і одинадцять років царював в Єрусалимі. А ім'я́ його матері — Зевуда, дочка Педаї, з Руми.
