Darby Bible Translation

  • Abijah’s War with Jeroboam

Abijah began to rule over Judah in the eighteenth year of Jeroboam’s reign in Israel.
  • Abijah Succeeds Rehoboam in Judah

In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.
  • He reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother was Maacah,a the daughter of Uriel from Gibeah.
Then war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam.
  • He reigned three years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Michaiah, the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
  • Judah, led by King Abijah, fielded 400,000 select warriors, while Jeroboam mustered 800,000 select troops from Israel.
  • And Abijah began the war with an army of men of war, four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, mighty men of valour.
  • When the army of Judah arrived in the hill country of Ephraim, Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim and shouted to Jeroboam and all Israel: “Listen to me!
  • Civil War against Jeroboam

And Abijah stood up on the top of mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, Jeroboam, and all Israel!
  • Don’t you realize that the LORD, the God of Israel, made a lasting covenantb with David, giving him and his descendants the throne of Israel forever?
  • Ought ye not to know that Jehovah the God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, to him and to his sons [by] a covenant of salt?
  • Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, a mere servant of David’s son Solomon, rebelled against his master.
  • But Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord.
  • Then a whole gang of scoundrels joined him, defying Solomon’s son Rehoboam when he was young and inexperienced and could not stand up to them.
  • And vain men, sons of Belial, gathered to him and strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, and Rehoboam was young and faint-hearted, and did not shew himself strong against them.
  • “Do you really think you can stand against the kingdom of the LORD that is led by the descendants of David? You may have a vast army, and you have those gold calves that Jeroboam made as your gods.
  • And now ye think to shew yourselves strong against the kingdom of Jehovah in the hand of the sons of David; and ye are a great multitude, and ye have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods.
  • But you have chased away the priests of the LORD (the descendants of Aaron) and the Levites, and you have appointed your own priests, just like the pagan nations. You let anyone become a priest these days! Whoever comes to be dedicated with a young bull and seven rams can become a priest of these so-called gods of yours!
  • Have ye not cast out the priests of Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made you priests as the peoples of the lands? whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, he becomes a priest of what is not God.
  • “But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not abandoned him. Only the descendants of Aaron serve the LORD as priests, and the Levites alone may help them in their work.
  • But as for us, Jehovah is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests that serve Jehovah are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites are at their work:
  • They present burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD every morning and evening. They place the Bread of the Presence on the holy table, and they light the gold lampstand every evening. We are following the instructions of the LORD our God, but you have abandoned him.
  • and they burn to Jehovah every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense; the loaves also are set in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with its lamps to burn every evening: for *we* keep the charge of Jehovah our God; but *ye* have forsaken him.
  • So you see, God is with us. He is our leader. His priests blow their trumpets and lead us into battle against you. O people of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed!”
  • And behold, we have God with us at our head, and his priests, and the loud-sounding trumpets to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, do not fight with Jehovah the God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
  • Meanwhile, Jeroboam had secretly sent part of his army around behind the men of Judah to ambush them.
  • But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; and they were before Judah, and the ambush behind them.
  • When Judah realized that they were being attacked from the front and the rear, they cried out to the LORD for help. Then the priests blew the trumpets,
  • And Judah looked back, and behold, they had the battle in front and behind; and they cried to Jehovah, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
  • and the men of Judah began to shout. At the sound of their battle cry, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel and routed them before Abijah and the army of Judah.
  • And the men of Judah gave a shout; and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
  • The Israelite army fled from Judah, and God handed them over to Judah in defeat.
  • And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand.
  • Abijah and his army inflicted heavy losses on them; 500,000 of Israel’s select troops were killed that day.
  • And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; and there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
  • So Judah defeated Israel on that occasion because they trusted in the LORD, the God of their ancestors.
  • And the children of Israel were humbled at that time, and the children of Judah were strengthened, because they relied upon Jehovah the God of their fathers.
  • Abijah and his army pursued Jeroboam’s troops and captured some of his towns, including Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron, along with their surrounding villages.
  • And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him: Bethel with its dependent villages, and Jeshanah with its dependent villages, and Ephron with its dependent villages.
  • So Jeroboam of Israel never regained his power during Abijah’s lifetime, and finally the LORD struck him down and he died.
  • The Death of Jeroboam

And Jeroboam did not recover strength again in the days of Abijah; and Jehovah smote him, and he died.
  • Meanwhile, Abijah of Judah grew more and more powerful. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
  • But Abijah strengthened himself, and took fourteen wives, and begot twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
  • The rest of the events of Abijah’s reign, including his words and deeds, are recorded in The Commentary of Iddo the Prophet.
  • And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his sayings, are written in the treatise of the prophet Iddo.
