New Living Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Job Frames His Plea to God

    “I am disgusted with my life.
    Let me complain freely.
    My bitter soul must complain.
  • Job Despairs of God’s Dealings

    “I loathe my own life;
    I will give full vent to my complaint;
    I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
  • I will say to God, ‘Don’t simply condemn me —
    tell me the charge you are bringing against me.
  • “I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me;
    Let me know why You contend with me.
  • What do you gain by oppressing me?
    Why do you reject me, the work of your own hands,
    while smiling on the schemes of the wicked?
  • ‘Is it right for You indeed to oppress,
    To reject the labor of Your hands,
    And to look favorably on the schemes of the wicked?
  • Are your eyes like those of a human?
    Do you see things only as people see them?
  • ‘Have You eyes of flesh?
    Or do You see as a man sees?
  • Is your lifetime only as long as ours?
    Is your life so short
  • ‘Are Your days as the days of a mortal,
    Or Your years as man’s years,
  • that you must quickly probe for my guilt
    and search for my sin?
  • That You should seek for my guilt
    And search after my sin?
  • Although you know I am not guilty,
    no one can rescue me from your hands.
  • ‘According to Your knowledge I am indeed not guilty,
    Yet there is no deliverance from Your hand.
  • “‘You formed me with your hands; you made me,
    yet now you completely destroy me.
  • ‘Your hands fashioned and made me altogether,
    And would You destroy me?
  • Remember that you made me from dust —
    will you turn me back to dust so soon?
  • ‘Remember now, that You have made me as clay;
    And would You turn me into dust again?
  • You guided my conception
    and formed me in the womb.a
  • ‘Did You not pour me out like milk
    And curdle me like cheese;
  • You clothed me with skin and flesh,
    and you knit my bones and sinews together.
  • Clothe me with skin and flesh,
    And knit me together with bones and sinews?
  • You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love.
    My life was preserved by your care.
  • ‘You have granted me life and lovingkindness;
    And Your care has preserved my spirit.
  • “‘Yet your real motive —
    your true intent —
  • ‘Yet these things You have concealed in Your heart;
    I know that this is within You:
  • was to watch me, and if I sinned,
    you would not forgive my guilt.
  • If I sin, then You would take note of me,
    And would not acquit me of my guilt.
  • If I am guilty, too bad for me;
    and even if I’m innocent, I can’t hold my head high,
    because I am filled with shame and misery.
  • ‘If I am wicked, woe to me!
    And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head.
    I am sated with disgrace and conscious of my misery.
  • And if I hold my head high, you hunt me like a lion
    and display your awesome power against me.
  • ‘Should my head be lifted up, You would hunt me like a lion;
    And again You would show Your power against me.
  • Again and again you witness against me.
    You pour out your growing anger on me
    and bring fresh armies against me.
  • ‘You renew Your witnesses against me
    And increase Your anger toward me;
    Hardship after hardship is with me.
  • “‘Why, then, did you deliver me from my mother’s womb?
    Why didn’t you let me die at birth?
  • ‘Why then have You brought me out of the womb?
    Would that I had died and no eye had seen me!
  • It would be as though I had never existed,
    going directly from the womb to the grave.
  • ‘I should have been as though I had not been,
    Carried from womb to tomb.’
  • I have only a few days left, so leave me alone,
    that I may have a moment of comfort
  • “Would He not let my few days alone?
    Withdraw from me that I may have a little cheer
  • before I leave — never to return —
    for the land of darkness and utter gloom.
  • Before I go — and I shall not return —
    To the land of darkness and deep shadow,
  • It is a land as dark as midnight,
    a land of gloom and confusion,
    where even the light is dark as midnight.’”
  • The land of utter gloom as darkness itself,
    Of deep shadow without order,
    And which shines as the darkness.”
