Darby Bible Translation

  • Job’s Second Test

One day the members of the heavenly courta came again to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan,b came with them.
  • Job Loses his Health

And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, and Satan also came among them to present himself before Jehovah.
  • “Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan.
Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.”
  • And Jehovah said to Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
  • Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless — a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.”
  • And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and abstaineth from evil? and still he remaineth firm in his integrity, though thou movedst me against him, to swallow him up without cause.
  • Satan replied to the LORD, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life.
  • And Satan answered Jehovah and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life;
  • But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!”
  • but put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, [and see] if he will not curse thee to thy face!
  • “All right, do with him as you please,” the LORD said to Satan. “But spare his life.”
  • And Jehovah said to Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.
  • So Satan left the LORD’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot.
  • And Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah; and he smote Job with a grievous botch from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
  • Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes.
  • And he took a potsherd to scrape himself with; and he sat among the ashes.
  • His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.”
  • And his wife said to him, Dost thou still remain firm in thine integrity? curse God and die.
  • But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
  • But he said to her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. We have also received good from God, and should we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

  • Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish

When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.
  • Job's Three Friends

And three friends of Job heard of all this evil that was come upon him. And they came each one from his place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to condole with him and to comfort him.
  • When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief.
  • And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept. And they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward the heavens.
  • Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.
  • And they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights; and none spoke a word to him; for they saw that [his] anguish was very great.
