Darby Bible Translation

  • Job Speaks of His Former Blessings

    Job continued speaking:
  • Job's Former Blessings

    And Job continued his parable and said,
  • “I long for the years gone by
    when God took care of me,
  • Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when +God preserved me;
  • when he lit up the way before me
    and I walked safely through the darkness.
  • When his lamp shone over my head, [and] by his light I walked through darkness;
  • When I was in my prime,
    God’s friendship was felt in my home.
  • As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret counsel of +God was over my tent,
  • The Almighty was still with me,
    and my children were around me.
  • When the Almighty was yet with me, my young men round about me;
  • My steps were awash in cream,
    and the rocks gushed olive oil for me.
  • When my steps were bathed in milk, and the rock poured out beside me rivers of oil! ...
  • “Those were the days when I went to the city gate
    and took my place among the honored leaders.
  • When I went out to the gate by the city, when I prepared my seat on the broadway,
  • The young stepped aside when they saw me,
    and even the aged rose in respect at my coming.
  • The young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged arose [and] stood up;
  • The princes stood in silence
    and put their hands over their mouths.
  • Princes refrained from talking, and laid the hand on their mouth;
  • The highest officials of the city stood quietly,
    holding their tongues in respect.
  • The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to their palate.
  • “All who heard me praised me.
    All who saw me spoke well of me.
  • When the ear heard [me], then it blessed me, and when the eye saw [me], it gave witness to me;
  • For I assisted the poor in their need
    and the orphans who required help.
  • For I delivered the afflicted that cried, and the fatherless who had no helper.
  • I helped those without hope, and they blessed me.
    And I caused the widows’ hearts to sing for joy.
  • The blessing of him that was perishing came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
  • Everything I did was honest.
    Righteousness covered me like a robe,
    and I wore justice like a turban.
  • I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was as a mantle and a turban.
  • I served as eyes for the blind
    and feet for the lame.
  • I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame;
  • I was a father to the poor
    and assisted strangers who needed help.
  • I was a father to the needy, and the cause which I knew not I searched out;
  • I broke the jaws of godless oppressors
    and plucked their victims from their teeth.
  • And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
  • “I thought, ‘Surely I will die surrounded by my family
    after a long, good life.a
  • And I said, I shall die in my nest, and multiply my days as the sand;
  • For I am like a tree whose roots reach the water,
    whose branches are refreshed with the dew.
  • My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew will lie all night on my branch;
  • New honors are constantly bestowed on me,
    and my strength is continually renewed.’
  • My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow be renewed in my hand.
  • “Everyone listened to my advice.
    They were silent as they waited for me to speak.
  • Unto me they listened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel:
  • And after I spoke, they had nothing to add,
    for my counsel satisfied them.
  • After my words they spoke not again, and my speech dropped upon them;
  • They longed for me to speak as people long for rain.
    They drank my words like a refreshing spring rain.
  • And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
  • When they were discouraged, I smiled at them.
    My look of approval was precious to them.
  • [If] I laughed on them, they believed [it] not; and they troubled not the serenity of my countenance.
  • Like a chief, I told them what to do.
    I lived like a king among his troops
    and comforted those who mourned.
  • I chose their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth mourners.
