New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • “My heart pounds as I think of this.
    It trembles within me.
  • Elihu Proclaims God's Majesty

At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place.
  • Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice
as it rolls from his mouth.
  • Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.
  • It rolls across the heavens,
and his lightning flashes in every direction.
  • He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.
  • Then comes the roaring of the thunder —
the tremendous voice of his majesty.
He does not restrain it when he speaks.
  • After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.
  • God’s voice is glorious in the thunder.
We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power.
  • God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.
  • “He directs the snow to fall on the earth
and tells the rain to pour down.
  • For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.
  • Then everyone stops working
so they can watch his power.
  • He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.
  • The wild animals take cover
    and stay inside their dens.
  • Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
  • The stormy wind comes from its chamber,
and the driving winds bring the cold.
  • Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.
  • God’s breath sends the ice,
    freezing wide expanses of water.
  • By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.
  • He loads the clouds with moisture,
and they flash with his lightning.
  • Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:
  • The clouds churn about at his direction.
They do whatever he commands throughout the earth.
  • And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.
  • He makes these things happen either to punish people
or to show his unfailing love.
  • He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.
  • “Pay attention to this, Job.
Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God!
  • Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.
  • Do you know how God controls the storm
and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds?
  • Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
  • Do you understand how he moves the clouds
    with wonderful perfection and skill?
  • Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?
  • When you are sweltering in your clothes
and the south wind dies down and everything is still,
  • How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
  • he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror.
    Can you do that?
  • Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?
  • “So teach the rest of us what to say to God.
We are too ignorant to make our own arguments.
  • Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
  • Should God be notified that I want to speak?
Can people even speak when they are confused?a
  • Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.
  • We cannot look at the sun,
for it shines brightly in the sky
when the wind clears away the clouds.
  • And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.
  • So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God.b
He is clothed in dazzling splendor.
  • Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.
  • We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty;
but even though he is just and righteous,
    he does not destroy us.
  • Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.
  • No wonder people everywhere fear him.
All who are wise show him reverence.c
  • Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.
