Darby Bible Translation

  • Eliphaz’s First Response to Job

    Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied to Job:
  • Eliphaz: the Innocent Prosper

    And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
  • “Will you be patient and let me say a word?
    For who could keep from speaking out?
  • If a word were essayed to thee, wouldest thou be grieved? But who can refrain from speaking?
  • “In the past you have encouraged many people;
    you have strengthened those who were weak.
  • Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands;
  • Your words have supported those who were falling;
    you encouraged those with shaky knees.
  • Thy words have upholden him that was stumbling, and thou hast braced up the bending knees:
  • But now when trouble strikes, you lose heart.
    You are terrified when it touches you.
  • But now it is come upon thee, and thou grievest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
  • Doesn’t your reverence for God give you confidence?
    Doesn’t your life of integrity give you hope?
  • Hath not thy piety been thy confidence, and the perfection of thy ways thy hope?
  • “Stop and think! Do the innocent die?
    When have the upright been destroyed?
  • Remember, I pray thee, who that was innocent has perished? and where were the upright cut off?
  • My experience shows that those who plant trouble
    and cultivate evil will harvest the same.
  • Even as I have seen, they that plough iniquity and sow mischief, reap the same.
  • A breath from God destroys them.
    They vanish in a blast of his anger.
  • By the breath of +God they perish, and by the blast of his nostrils are they consumed.
  • The lion roars and the wildcat snarls,
    but the teeth of strong lions will be broken.
  • The roar of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken;
  • The fierce lion will starve for lack of prey,
    and the cubs of the lioness will be scattered.
  • The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.
  • “This truth was given to me in secret,
    as though whispered in my ear.
  • Now to me a word was secretly brought, and mine ear received a whisper thereof.
  • It came to me in a disturbing vision at night,
    when people are in a deep sleep.
  • In thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men: --
  • Fear gripped me,
    and my bones trembled.
  • Fear came on me, and trembling, and made all my bones to shake;
  • A spirita swept past my face,
    and my hair stood on end.b
  • And a spirit passed before my face -- the hair of my flesh stood up --
  • The spirit stopped, but I couldn’t see its shape.
    There was a form before my eyes.
    In the silence I heard a voice say,
  • It stood still; I could not discern the appearance thereof: a form was before mine eyes; I heard a slight murmur and a voice:
  • ‘Can a mortal be innocent before God?
    Can anyone be pure before the Creator?’
  • Shall [mortal] man be more just than +God? Shall a man be purer than his Maker?
  • “If God does not trust his own angels
    and has charged his messengers with foolishness,
  • Lo, he trusteth not his servants, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
  • how much less will he trust people made of clay!
    They are made of dust, crushed as easily as a moth.
  • How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed as the moth!
  • They are alive in the morning but dead by evening,
    gone forever without a trace.
  • From morning to evening are they smitten: without any heeding it, they perish for ever.
  • Their tent-cords are pulled and the tent collapses,
    and they die in ignorance.
  • Is not their tent-cord torn away in them? they die, and without wisdom.
