Darby Bible Translation

  • Then the LORD said to Job,
  • Job Humbles Himself Before God

And Jehovah answered Job and said,
  • “Do you still want to argue with the Almighty?
You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?”
  • Shall he that will contend with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth +God, let him answer it.

  • Job Responds to the LORD

Then Job replied to the LORD,
  • And Job answered Jehovah and said,
  • “I am nothing — how could I ever find the answers?
I will cover my mouth with my hand.
  • Behold, I am nought: what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
  • I have said too much already.
I have nothing more to say.”
  • Once have I spoken, and I will not answer; yea twice, but I will proceed no further.

  • The LORD Challenges Job Again

Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind:
  • And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
  • “Brace yourself like a man,
because I have some questions for you,
    and you must answer them.
  • Gird up now thy loins like a man: I will demand of thee, and inform thou me.
  • “Will you discredit my justice
and condemn me just to prove you are right?
  • Wilt thou also annul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me that thou mayest be righteous?
  • Are you as strong as God?
Can you thunder with a voice like his?
  • Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
  • All right, put on your glory and splendor,
    your honor and majesty.
  • Deck thyself now with glory and excellency, and clothe thyself with majesty and splendour.
  • Give vent to your anger.
Let it overflow against the proud.
  • Cast abroad the ragings of thine anger, and look on every one that is proud, and abase him:
  • Humiliate the proud with a glance;
walk on the wicked where they stand.
  • Look on every one that is proud, bring him low, and tread down the wicked in their place:
  • Bury them in the dust.
Imprison them in the world of the dead.
  • Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in secret.
  • Then even I would praise you,
for your own strength would save you.
  • Then will I also praise thee, because thy right hand saveth thee.
  • “Take a look at Behemoth,a
which I made, just as I made you.
It eats grass like an ox.
  • See now the behemoth, which I made with thee: he eateth grass as an ox.
  • See its powerful loins
and the muscles of its belly.
  • Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the muscles of his belly.
  • Its tail is as strong as a cedar.
The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together.
  • He bendeth his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are woven together.
  • Its bones are tubes of bronze.
Its limbs are bars of iron.
  • His bones are tubes of bronze, his members are like bars of iron.
  • It is a prime example of God’s handiwork,
and only its Creator can threaten it.
  • He is the chief of God's ways: he that made him gave him his sword.
  • The mountains offer it their best food,
where all the wild animals play.
  • For the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
  • It lies under the lotus plants,b
hidden by the reeds in the marsh.
  • He lieth under lotus-bushes, in the covert of the reed and fen:
  • The lotus plants give it shade
among the willows beside the stream.
  • Lotus-bushes cover him with their shade; the willows of the brook surround him.
  • It is not disturbed by the raging river,
not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it.
  • Lo, the river overfloweth -- he startleth not: he is confident though a Jordan break forth against his mouth.
  • No one can catch it off guard
or put a ring in its nose and lead it away.
  • Shall he be taken in front? will they pierce through [his] nose in the trap?
