Job’s Third Speech: A Response to Bildad

Then Job spoke again:

1

А Йов відповів та й сказав:

2

“Yes, I know all this is true in principle.
But how can a person be declared innocent in God’s sight?

2

Справді пізнав я, що так. Та як оправда́тись люди́ні земній перед Богом?

3

If someone wanted to take God to court,a
would it be possible to answer him even once in a thousand times?

3

Якщо вона схоче на прю стати з Ним, — Він відповіді їй не дасть ні на о́дне із тисячі ска́ржень.

4

For God is so wise and so mighty.
Who has ever challenged him successfully?

4

Він мудрого серця й могутньої сили; хто був проти Нього упертий — і ці́лим зостався?

5

“Without warning, he moves the mountains,
overturning them in his anger.

5

Він го́ри зриває, й не знають вони, що в гніві Своїм Він їх переверну́в.

6

He shakes the earth from its place,
and its foundations tremble.

6

Він землю трясе́ з її місця, і стовпи́ її тру́сяться.

7

If he commands it, the sun won’t rise
and the stars won’t shine.

7

Він сонцеві скаже, — й не сходить воно, і Він запеча́тує зо́рі.

8

He alone has spread out the heavens
and marches on the waves of the sea.

Розтягує небо Він Сам, і хо́дить по мо́рських висо́тах,

9

He made all the stars — the Bear and Orion,
the Pleiades and the constellations of the southern sky.

9

Він Во́за створив, Оріо́на та Волосожа́ра, та зо́рі півде́нні.

10

He does great things too marvelous to understand.
He performs countless miracles.

10

Він чинить велике та недосліди́ме, предивне, якому немає числа!

11

“Yet when he comes near, I cannot see him.
When he moves by, I do not see him go.

11

Ось Він надо мною прохо́дить, та я не побачу, і Він пере́йде, а я не пригля́нусь до Нього

12

If he snatches someone in death, who can stop him?
Who dares to ask, ‘What are you doing?’

Ось Він схо́пить кого, — хто заве́рне Його, хто скаже Йому: що́ Ти робиш?

13

And God does not restrain his anger.
Even the monsters of the seab are crushed beneath his feet.

Бог гніву Свойого не спи́нить, під Ним гнуться Рага́вові помічники́, —

14

“So who am I, that I should try to answer God
or even reason with him?

14

що ж тоді відпові́м я Йому́? Які я слова́ підберу́ проти Нього,

15

Even if I were right, I would have no defense.
I could only plead for mercy.

15

я, який коли б був справедли́вий, то не відповідав би, я, що благаю свойо́го Суддю?

16

And even if I summoned him and he responded,
I’m not sure he would listen to me.

Коли б я взива́в, а Він мені відповідь дав, — не повірю, що вчув би мій голос,

17

For he attacks me with a storm
and repeatedly wounds me without cause.

17

Він, що бурею може розте́рти мене та помно́жити рани мої безневи́нно.

18

He will not let me catch my breath,
but fills me instead with bitter sorrows.

18

Не дає Він мені й зве́сти духа мого, бо мене насича́є гірко́тою.

19

If it’s a question of strength, he’s the strong one.
If it’s a matter of justice, who dares to summon himc to court?

Коли ходить про силу, то Він Всемогутній, коли ж ходить про суд, — хто посві́дчить мені?

20

Though I am innocent, my own mouth would pronounce me guilty.
Though I am blameless, itd would prove me wicked.

Якщо б справедливим я був, то осу́дять мене мої у́ста, якщо я безневи́нний, то вчинять мене винува́тим.

21

“I am innocent,
but it makes no difference to me —
I despise my life.

21

Я невинний, проте́ своєї душі я не знаю, і не ра́дий життям своїм я.

22

Innocent or wicked, it is all the same to God.
That’s why I say, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

Це одне, а тому́ я кажу́: невинного як і лукавого Він вигубля́є.

23

When a plaguee sweeps through,
he laughs at the death of the innocent.

23

Якщо нагло бич смерть заподі́ює, — Він з про́би невинних сміється.

24

The whole earth is in the hands of the wicked,
and God blinds the eyes of the judges.
If he’s not the one who does it, who is?

24

У ру́ку безбожного да́на земля, та Він лиця су́ддів її закриває. Як не Він, тоді хто?

25

“My life passes more swiftly than a runner.
It flees away without a glimpse of happiness.

25

А дні мої стали швидкіші, як той скорохо́д, повтікали, не бачили доброго,

26

It disappears like a swift papyrus boat,
like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

26

промину́ли, немов ті човни́ очере́тяні, мов орел, що несеться на здо́бич.

27

If I decided to forget my complaints,
to put away my sad face and be cheerful,

27

Якщо я скажу́: Хай забуду своє наріка́ння, хай зміню́ я обличчя своє й підбадьо́рюся,

28

I would still dread all the pain,
for I know you will not find me innocent, O God.

28

то боюся всіх сму́тків своїх, і я знаю, що Ти не очи́стиш мене.

29

Whatever happens, I will be found guilty.
So what’s the use of trying?

29

Все одно буду я́ винува́тий, то на́що надармо я мучитися бу́ду?

30

Even if I were to wash myself with soap
and clean my hands with lye,

30

Коли б я умився снігово́ю водою, і почи́стив би лу́гом долоні свої,

31

you would plunge me into a muddy ditch,
and my own filthy clothing would hate me.

31

то й тоді Ти до гро́бу опу́стиш мене, і учи́нить бридки́м мене о́діж моя.

32

“God is not a mortal like me,
so I cannot argue with him or take him to trial.

32

Бо Він не люди́на, як я, й Йому відповіді я не дам, і не пі́демо ра́зом на суд,

33

If only there were a mediator between us,
someone who could bring us together.

33

поміж нами нема посере́дника, що поклав би на нас на обо́х свою руку.

34

The mediator could make God stop beating me,
and I would no longer live in terror of his punishment.

34

Нехай забере Він від мене Свойого бича́, Його ж страх хай мене не жахає,

35

Then I could speak to him without fear,
but I cannot do that in my own strength.

35

тоді буду казати, й не буду боятись Його, бо я не такий сам з собою!
