New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness.
    Let the whole world know what he has done.
  • Tell of His Wonderful Works!

    Give ye thanks unto Jehovah, call upon his name; make known his acts among the peoples.
  • Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.
    Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
  • Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him; meditate upon all his wondrous works.
  • Exult in his holy name;
    rejoice, you who worship the LORD.
  • Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek Jehovah.
  • Search for the LORD and for his strength;
    continually seek him.
  • Seek Jehovah and his strength, seek his face continually;
  • Remember the wonders he has performed,
    his miracles, and the rulings he has given,
  • Remember his wondrous works which he hath done, his miracles and the judgments of his mouth:
  • you children of his servant Abraham,
    you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.
  • Ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.
  • He is the LORD our God.
    His justice is seen throughout the land.
  • He, Jehovah, is our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
  • He always stands by his covenant —
    the commitment he made to a thousand generations.
  • He is ever mindful of his covenant, -- the word which he commanded to a thousand generations, --
  • This is the covenant he made with Abraham
    and the oath he swore to Isaac.
  • Which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
  • He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
    and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:
  • And he confirmed it unto Jacob for a statute, unto Israel for an everlasting covenant,
  • “I will give you the land of Canaan
    as your special possession.”
  • Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;
  • He said this when they were few in number,
    a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.
  • When they were a few men in number, of small account, and strangers in it.
  • They wandered from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another.
  • And they went from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people.
  • Yet he did not let anyone oppress them.
    He warned kings on their behalf:
  • He suffered no man to oppress them, and reproved kings for their sakes,
  • “Do not touch my chosen people,
    and do not hurt my prophets.”
  • [Saying,] Touch not mine anointed ones, and do my prophets no harm.
  • He called for a famine on the land of Canaan,
    cutting off its food supply.
  • And he called for a famine upon the land; he broke the whole staff of bread.
  • Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them —
    Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
  • He sent a man before them: Joseph was sold for a bondman.
  • They bruised his feet with fetters
    and placed his neck in an iron collar.
  • They afflicted his feet with fetters; his soul came into irons;
  • Until the time came to fulfill his dreams,a
    the LORD tested Joseph’s character.
  • Until the time when what he said came about: the word of Jehovah tried him.
  • Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free;
    the ruler of the nation opened his prison door.
  • The king sent and loosed him -- the ruler of peoples -- and let him go free.
  • Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household;
    he became ruler over all the king’s possessions.
  • He made him lord of his house, and ruler over all his possessions:
  • He could instructb the king’s aides as he pleased
    and teach the king’s advisers.
  • To bind his princes at his pleasure, and teach his elders wisdom.
  • Then Israel arrived in Egypt;
    Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.
  • And Israel came into Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
  • And the LORD multiplied the people of Israel
    until they became too mighty for their enemies.
  • And he made his people exceeding fruitful, and made them mightier than their oppressors.
  • Then he turned the Egyptians against the Israelites,
    and they plotted against the LORD’s servants.
  • He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants.
  • But the LORD sent his servant Moses,
    along with Aaron, whom he had chosen.
  • He sent Moses his servant, [and] Aaron whom he had chosen:
  • They performed miraculous signs among the Egyptians,
    and wonders in the land of Ham.
  • They set his signs among them, and miracles in the land of Ham.
  • The LORD blanketed Egypt in darkness,
    for they had defiedc his commands to let his people go.
  • He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word.
  • He turned their water into blood,
    poisoning all the fish.
  • He turned their waters into blood, and caused their fish to die.
  • Then frogs overran the land
    and even invaded the king’s bedrooms.
  • Their land swarmed with frogs, -- in the chambers of their kings.
  • When the LORD spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians,
    and gnats swarmed across Egypt.
  • He spoke, and there came dog-flies, [and] gnats in all their borders.
  • He sent them hail instead of rain,
    and lightning flashed over the land.
  • He gave them hail for rain, [and] flaming fire in their land;
  • He ruined their grapevines and fig trees
    and shattered all the trees.
  • And he smote their vines and their fig-trees, and broke the trees of their borders.
  • He spoke, and hordes of locusts came —
    young locusts beyond number.
  • He spoke, and the locust came, and the cankerworm, even without number;
  • They ate up everything green in the land,
    destroying all the crops in their fields.
  • And they devoured every herb in their land, and ate up the fruit of their ground.
  • Then he killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home,
    the pride and joy of each family.
  • And he smote every firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their vigour.
  • The LORD brought his people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold;
    and not one among the tribes of Israel even stumbled.
  • And he brought them forth with silver and gold; and there was not one feeble among their tribes.
  • Egypt was glad when they were gone,
    for they feared them greatly.
  • Egypt rejoiced at their departure; for the fear of them had fallen upon them.
  • The LORD spread a cloud above them as a covering
    and gave them a great fire to light the darkness.
  • He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light in the night.
  • They asked for meat, and he sent them quail;
    he satisfied their hunger with manna — bread from heaven.
  • They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.
  • He split open a rock, and water gushed out
    to form a river through the dry wasteland.
  • He opened the rock, and waters gushed forth; they ran in the dry places [like] a river.
  • For he remembered his sacred promise
    to his servant Abraham.
  • For he remembered his holy word, [and] Abraham his servant;
  • So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy,
    his chosen ones with rejoicing.
  • And he brought forth his people with gladness, his chosen with rejoicing;
  • He gave his people the lands of pagan nations,
    and they harvested crops that others had planted.
  • And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the labour of the peoples:
  • All this happened so they would follow his decrees
    and obey his instructions.
    Praise the LORD!
  • That they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Hallelujah!
