  • Book Five
    (Psalms 107–150)

    Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.
  • Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

    Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever!
  • Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out!
    Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.
  • Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    whom he has redeemed from troublea
  • For he has gathered the exiles from many lands,
    from east and west,
    from north and south.a
  • and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.
  • Some wandered in the wilderness,
    lost and homeless.
  • Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
  • Hungry and thirsty,
    they nearly died.
  • hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
  • “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble,
    and he rescued them from their distress.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
  • He led them straight to safety,
    to a city where they could live.
  • He led them by a straight way
    till they reached a city to dwell in.
  • Let them praise the LORD for his great love
    and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
  • Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
  • For he satisfies the thirsty
    and fills the hungry with good things.
  • For he satisfies the longing soul,
    and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
  • Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom,
    imprisoned in iron chains of misery.
  • Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    prisoners in affliction and in irons,
  • They rebelled against the words of God,
    scorning the counsel of the Most High.
  • for they had rebelled against the words of God,
    and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
  • That is why he broke them with hard labor;
    they fell, and no one was there to help them.
  • So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor;
    they fell down, with none to help.
  • “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
  • He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom;
    he snapped their chains.
  • He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
    and burst their bonds apart.
  • Let them praise the LORD for his great love
    and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
  • Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
  • For he broke down their prison gates of bronze;
    he cut apart their bars of iron.
  • For he shatters the doors of bronze
    and cuts in two the bars of iron.
  • Some were fools; they rebelled
    and suffered for their sins.
  • Some were fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
  • They couldn’t stand the thought of food,
    and they were knocking on death’s door.
  • they loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.
  • “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
  • He sent out his word and healed them,
    snatching them from the door of death.
  • He sent out his word and healed them,
    and delivered them from their destruction.
  • Let them praise the LORD for his great love
    and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
  • Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
  • Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving
    and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.
  • And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!
  • Some went off to sea in ships,
    plying the trade routes of the world.
  • Some went down to the sea in ships,
    doing business on the great waters;
  • They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action,
    his impressive works on the deepest seas.
  • they saw the deeds of the Lord,
    his wondrous works in the deep.
  • He spoke, and the winds rose,
    stirring up the waves.
  • For he commanded and raised the stormy wind,
    which lifted up the waves of the sea.
  • Their ships were tossed to the heavens
    and plunged again to the depths;
    the sailors cringed in terror.
  • They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;
    their courage melted away in their evil plight;
  • They reeled and staggered like drunkards
    and were at their wits’ end.
  • they reeled and staggered like drunken men
    and were at their wits’ end.b
  • “LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble,
    and he saved them from their distress.
  • Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
  • He calmed the storm to a whisper
    and stilled the waves.
  • He made the storm be still,
    and the waves of the sea were hushed.
  • What a blessing was that stillness
    as he brought them safely into harbor!
  • Then they were glad that the watersc were quiet,
    and he brought them to their desired haven.
  • Let them praise the LORD for his great love
    and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
  • Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
  • Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation
    and before the leaders of the nation.
  • Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
    and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
  • He changes rivers into deserts,
    and springs of water into dry, thirsty land.
  • He turns rivers into a desert,
    springs of water into thirsty ground,
  • He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands,
    because of the wickedness of those who live there.
  • a fruitful land into a salty waste,
    because of the evil of its inhabitants.
  • But he also turns deserts into pools of water,
    the dry land into springs of water.
  • He turns a desert into pools of water,
    a parched land into springs of water.
  • He brings the hungry to settle there
    and to build their cities.
  • And there he lets the hungry dwell,
    and they establish a city to live in;
  • They sow their fields, plant their vineyards,
    and harvest their bumper crops.
  • they sow fields and plant vineyards
    and get a fruitful yield.
  • How he blesses them!
    They raise large families there,
    and their herds of livestock increase.
  • By his blessing they multiply greatly,
    and he does not let their livestock diminish.
  • When they decrease in number and become impoverished
    through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,
  • When they are diminished and brought low
    through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
  • the LORD pours contempt on their princes,
    causing them to wander in trackless wastelands.
  • he pours contempt on princes
    and makes them wander in trackless wastes;
  • But he rescues the poor from trouble
    and increases their families like flocks of sheep.
  • but he raises up the needy out of affliction
    and makes their families like flocks.
  • The godly will see these things and be glad,
    while the wicked are struck silent.
  • The upright see it and are glad,
    and all wickedness shuts its mouth.
  • Those who are wise will take all this to heart;
    they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD.
  • Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
    let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.
